    Notizen: The lateral order factor of four Indian varieties of silk, viz., Mulberry, Tasar, Eri, and Muga, were determined by electron diffraction technique and compared with that determined by x-ray diffraction. The profiles of the 002 and 201 reflections in Mulberry were better resolved by the electron diffraction technique.

    Notizen: Four Indian varieties of silk viz., Mulberry, Tasar, Eri, and Muga, have been investigated by x-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The hydrolysis for Mulberry was carried out using 6N HCI at 40°C, whereas the other wild varieties of silk were hydrolyzed partially using 8N HCI at 40°C. The x-ray order factor, IR crystallinity index, and crystallite size have been determined for control, 48-hr hydrolysates, and (48 + 48)-hr hydrolysates. The lateral order improvement need not be associated with selective dissolution of amorphous region. This was further varified by short duration hydrolysis. A sort of recrystallization process could be attributed to order improvement. The results are discussed to understand the fine structure of the crystalline region of the fibroin.

    Notizen: Studies on the effect of nitrogen plasma on morphology and textile properties of mulberry silk fibers and fabrics have been conducted. The changes in the morphological structure have been monitored by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and internal reflection infrared spectroscopy. The changes in some of textile properties such as wettability, drying rate, and crease recovery owing to plasma treatment have also been investigated. It has been found that the surface of mulberry silk gets etched away, even affecting the crystalline region. This behavior is opposite to our findings on tassar silk. Therefore, an explanation of this differential behavior of mulberry with tasar on the basis of amino acid linkages vis-à-vis bonding, wettability, drying rate, and water retention capacity has been attempted. These results have been used to arrive at an understanding of internal structure of mulberry.

    Notizen: Accurate estimation of amino acids composition has been carried out for hydrolysates of four varieties of Indian silks, viz., Mulberry, Tasar, Eri, and Muga. These studies have revealed that the hydrolysate (hydrofibroin or crystalline region) in the case of Mulberry consists of glycine, alanine, and serine, whereas in the case of Tasar, Eri, and Muga, it is found to be mainly alanine. Other amino acids were also found to be present in the hydrolysate of these silks. But, the quantities present in each case were found to be negligible when compared to those amino acids cited above. Furthermore, these results are in conformity with the structure elucidation made by infrared spectral studies and x-ray diffraction.
