    Notes: Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) appears important in ultraviolet-induced immunosuppression, suggesting that it is a susceptibility candidate for cutaneous basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We now describe data on the association between TNF microsatellite polymorphisms, first on susceptibility in 202 controls and 133 cases each having two to 30 BCCs, and secondly, within the cases, on BCC numbers. The data show that the proportions of individuals with TNF a1- and a7-containing genotypes were significantly different (P = 0·0271, P = 0·0393, respectively) between cases and controls. Secondly, within the cases, TNF alleles d4 (P = 0·023) and d6 (P = 0·006) alone, and the TNF a2–b4–d5 haplotype (P = 0·007), were significantly associated with the number of BCC lesions. These preliminary data provide the first evidence that TNF microsatellite polymorphism may influence the pathogenesis of multiple BCC.

    Notes: Abstract: Bone mineral density (BMD), the major determinant of fracture risk, is under strong genetic control. Although polymorphisms of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene have been suggested to account for some of the genetic variation in bone mass, the influence of VDR genotypes on osteoporosis remains controversial. Previous published studies have focused mainly on women, but the pattern of response in men has not been determined. Using the BsmI restriction enzyme, we studied the influence of the different VDR genotypes on bone mass, bone loss and the prevalence of vertebral fractures in a population-based sample of both sexes (n = 326). BMD was measured at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, with a 4-year interval, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Vertebral fractures were assessed by two lateral radiographs at the beginning and end of the study. The prevalence of the three possible VDR genotypes was similar to those in other Caucasian populations and no differences were found between men and women. Women with the favorable bb genotype showed significantly higher BMD values at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, and a positive rate of BMD change at the femoral neck compared with women with the BB and Bb genotypes. Moreover, women with the bb genotype showed a trend toward a lower prevalence and incidence of vertebral fractures (p= 0.07). We have not found any differences between VDR genotypes in men. In conclusion, VDR gene polymorphisms are related to bone mass and bone loss in women; also a trend in the prevalence of vertebral fractures was observed in postmenopausal women but not in men.

    Notes: Abstract Four field experiments were conducted with creole cattle in Guadeloupe to study the attractivity for adult ticks of animals previously infested with males of Amblyomma variegatum producing aggregation attachment pheromones (AAPs). In each experiment, two groups of cattle were used; the first group was infested with adult A. variegatum and the second group was kept free of ticks and pheromones by acaricidal treatment and by washing the hair and skin of previously infested sites. Both groups were then exposed to natural infestation by ticks present in the environment or by ticks bred in the laboratory and released on the pasture. The number of additional ticks infesting animals were compared between the treated and control groups. There were no significant differences between both groups in the numbers of new male ticks infesting the animals during the first days following the beginning of the experiment. Thereafter, comparison of the slopes of infestation indicated that infested cattle were no more attractive for male ticks than uninfested hosts. Uninfested cattle were spontaneously and rapidly infested by male ticks. It is concluded that carbon dioxide or another host component was a major attractant for A. variegatum males. Female ticks attached on predilection sites exclusively in the presence of AAP-producing males, i.e. 5–10 days after the attachment of the first males. Based on these results we postulate that slow-release devices impregnated with pheromones have no additional attractive effect on A. variegatum males under Caribbean conditions. However, they may be useful in inducing the attachment of females, but only in the first days preceding the arrival of pioneer AAP-producing males. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998
