Notes: An experimental study of the flow over a shallow rectangular cavity indicates that, between the states of periodic and fully developed turbulent flow, three different regimes of fluid motion occur as the Reynolds number increases. In the first regime, regime I, the time trace from a pressure transducer, located at the downstream corner of the cavity, varies weakly in amplitude. The frequency spectrum of the trace shows that a single frequency, its' first harmonic, and a second frequency are selectively amplified. In the second regime, regime II, there is intermittency in the pressure time trace and the two incommensurate frequencies are further apart from each other than in regime I. The primary frequency is the result of a shear-layer instability but the secondary frequency is believed to depend on a transverse wave on the primary cavity vortex. The exchange of fluid between this vortex and the free stream is enhanced when the two waves are constructively interfering and the exchange is attenuated when the two waves are destructively interfering. If the amplitude of the transverse wave is sufficiently large and the two waves are in phase, fluid from the primary vortex is observed to burst through the shear layer giving rise to a period of apparently random motion. In the third regime, regime III, the pressure oscillations vary strongly with time, and include frequent periods of intense irregular behavior. At times, the pressure cycles have double peaks when the vortices that form in the shear layer are partially clipped by the downstream edge of the cavity. This clipping does not, however, coincide with a decay in the shear-layer oscillations, as it does in regime II.

Notes: This paper is the second of two which together report on a 2-year research project (Davies et al 1994) investigating the implementation and impact of introducing mentors in the Common Foundation Programme of the new scheme for preregistration nurse education The study was commissioned by the Department of Health and undertaken on an all-Wales basis The first paper (Phillips et al 1996) set the scene by discussing some underlying issues to policy reforms in nurse education, then placing the study setting with in the context of a changing scenario in the National Health Service The key techniques of data collection were then outlined (interviews, diary accounts, questionnaires, observations in clinical settings) This second paper will present the key themes to emerge from the data and suggest some important issues which arise from the findings of the research, worthy of further consideration and debate

Notes: This study focused on the introduction of mentors in the Common Foundation Programme of Project 2000 schemes of preregistration nurse education The research, which was commissioned by the Department of Health Research and Development Division on behalf of the Welsh Office Nursing Division, began in February 1992 and was undertaken on an all-Wales basis The completed report aims to provide policy makers with information relating to important issues which are central to the teaching and learning of nursing in clinical locations This first paper discusses some background issues and gives a brief conceptual framework for considering policy reform, summarizes the research questions which emerged and describes the methods used to address them The second paper (to appear in the next issue of the journal) will describe the key findings from the study and discuss some ensuing potential implications and considerations for all those involved in the preparation of future practitioners of nursing

Notes: Abstract. This paper presents a summary of some of the work-in-progress within the Alexandria Digital Library Project. In particular, we present scalable methods for locating information at different levels within a distributed digital library environment. Starting at the high level, we show how queries can be routed to appropriate information sources. At a given source, efficient query processing is supported by using materialized views and multidimensional index structures. Finally, we propose solutions to the problem of storage and retrieval of large objects on both secondary and tertiary storage devices.

Notes: Abstract Researchers from the Savannah River Technology Center, the Center for Applied Isotope Studies (CAIS) and Sampling Systems have developed a prototype Field Deployable Tritium Analysis System (FDTAS) for near-real-time measurements of environmental levels of tritium in ground and surface water. The device consists of a modified liquid scintillation counter coupled to an automatic sampler which incorporates on-line water purification. The FDTAS has been field tested at several Savannah River Site locations and has produced results comparable to laboratory analyses for low concentrations of tritium. Figures of merit obtained in the field include an average tritium background count rate of 1.5 counts per minute (cpm), tritium detection efficiency of ≈25%, and a detection limit of 〈10 Bq/l for a 100 minute count.

Notes: Strength, dimensional change during setting, and corrosion resistance have been measured for amalgams prepared from splat-cooled alloys of different compositions in the Ag-Sn-Cu system. The amalgam with optimum values of these properties was made from the alloy containing 60 at. % Ag, 25 at. % Sn, and 15 at. % Cu. Tensile strengths for amalgams from this alloy were about 8000 psi, dimensional change during setting near zero, and corrosion resistance was good.X-Ray diffraction showed that the γ1 and γ2 phases formed during the early stages of setting but that the γ2 phase had essentially disappeared after about 24 hr. At the latter time Cu6Sn5 was present.
