Description / Table of Contents: Polyacrolein (PA) can be transformed with formaldehyde to a polymer (PAF) which is water- and alkali-soluble and shows CH2OH- and COOH-groups. This polymer reacts with aldehydes to acetales (PAF acetales) which still contains ester groups. By an alkaline saponification of the ester groups water-soluble high-molecular substances with acetale groups are obtained. Polyacroleine is oxidized in alkaline solution with oxygen in presence of mixtures of special metalloxides to a polycarbonic acid of the kind of polyacrylic acid. The polyacroleine-formaldehyde-reaction product (PAF) can be oxidized to a similar polycarbonic acid with the same method.
