Notes: We have constructed a multilayered composite material consisting of alternating layers of rf-sputtered barium titanate and spin-coated polycarbonate containing a third-order nonlinear optical organic dopant. The effective nonlinear susceptibility of the composite describing the quadratic electro-optic effect was measured to have the value χ(3)=(3.2+0.2i)×10−21±25% (m/V)2. The real part of this value is a factor of 3.2±50% times larger than that of the doped polycarbonate, which is the dominant electro-optic component of the composite. We have modeled the experiment by using both effective medium theory and by solving the wave equation for our multilayered system, and we find that these approaches give consistent predictions which are in good agreement to the experimental results. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In the last quarter of the twentieth century, urban law practice changed markedly. Using data from two surveys of Chicago lawyers, the first in 1975 and the second in 1995, the article argues that the most consequential development was the sheer increase in the size of firms. The organization of the delivery of legal services was restructured, and the relationships between lawyers and clients changed. Growth in the power and prestige of corporate inside counsel, greater competition among law firms, and the move by those firms into broader geographic markets precipitated changes in firm management. The recent movement into the international market for legal services of large accounting firms, financial services firms, and consulting firms (creating "multidisciplinary" partnerships) suggests the possibility of more far reaching changes in the next decade or two.

Notes: Summary Vinzolidine (VZL), a new semisynthetic vinca alkaloid, was studied by using 3H-labeled VZL administered PO in four patients. At single doses from 1.5 to 36.5 mg/m2 (0.034–0.919 mg/kg) radioactivity was rapidly absorbed with a half-life of absorption of 1 h and a peak at 4 h. Plasma decay of radiolabel followed a biphasic pattern with an alpha half-life of 10.48 h and a beta half-life of 172 h. The apparent plasma clearance was dose-dependent. The total radiolabel recovered was 52.9%±11.4% of the administered label, with 90% in the feces. HPLC analysis revealed that in all extracted plasma, urine, and feces the predominant material was unchanged VZL. Several metabolites were observed but not identified.

Notes: Summary Vinzolidine (VZL), a semisynthetic vinblastine (VLB) derivative, was tested against a variety of solid tumors in the human tumor clonogenic assay (HTCA). The emphasis was on continuous drug exposure because of the schedule-dependency of the vincas and long half-life of VZL. Of tumor types with more than ten samples tested, the percentage of cases exhibiting inhibition (50% or less of control) of tumor colony forming units (TCFU) was as follows: melanoma (48%), lung cancer (48%), breast cancer (40%), renal cancer (33%), and ovarian cancer (24%). In tumor types tested less frequently, inhibition of TCFU after continuous or one hour drug exposure was observed in 2/7 colon cancers, 1/3 pancreatic cancers and 3/4 gastric cancers. Paired analysis of tumors tested to both VZL and VLB demonstrated no significant difference in overall activity of these two vinca alkaloids. VZL appears to be a promising drug for clinical trials, with in vitro activity in melanoma, lung and breast cancers. More interesting is the suggestion of activity in gastrointestinal tumors, especially colon cancer which is generally resistant to drugs in the HTCA and in vivo.

Notes: Summary Heritabilities and responses to selection for cut flower yield were estimated for a population of gerbera. Broad-sense heritabilities averaged 42 percent, but may be as high as 66 percent. Narrow sense heritabilities averaged 68 percent when based on half-sib families, and averaged 60 percent when based on parent-offspring regression. These results suggest that most genetic variance for flower yield is additive. However, estimates of realized heritability averaged only 16 percent and inbreeding depression was estimated to be at least 38 percent, suggesting a major role for non-additive genetic variance. Nonetheless, selection for cut flower yield is expected to be successful.

Notes: Summary Estimates of broad-sense heritability for cut-flower vase longevity were 36 and 46 percent for a sample of Gerbera clones. Estimates of narrow-sense heritability for vase longevity were 0, 24 and 38 percent over 3 generations of the Davis Population. Response to selection for this character in this population is expected to be slow.

Notes: This paper describes an algorithm which reduces the apparently diverse and complicated matrix calculations required to evaluate the finite element matrices of doubly curved quadrilateral shell finite elements to a few basic manipulations which are then repeated a large number of times. The algorithm can be transcribed particularly quickly into computer code. It lends itself to a structured programming approach and the flexibility of the ensuing coding is high. The accuracy of the code can be ascertained with relative ease and fault-finding is comparatively straightforward; hence, a high degree of confidence can be placed in its execution. The element chosen to illustrate the application of the algorithm is a particularly difficult example. It is expected that the algorithm described would be useful in a wide variety of finite element computer program applications.

Notes: Summary Vinzolidine (VZL) is a semisynthetic vinca alkaloid with broad antitumor activity in animal models of malignancy but had unpredictable toxic effects when given orally to humans. To minimize the toxic effects due to potential erratic gastrointestinal absorption, this drug was restudied in man as an intravenous preparation given as a rapid injection every two weeks. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) on this schedule was 9.0 mg/m2 with unpredictable leukopenia (usually occurring 5–14 days post treatment but appearing erratically), constipation, paralytic ileus, and inappropriate ADH syndrome as major toxicities. Nonhematologic toxicities were dose-limiting. Repetitive dosing at two week intervals was associated with leukopenia at D 14–15 in some but not all patients treated above 5.0 mg/m2 precluding further treatment on schedule. In contrast, the oral MTD of this agent in our prior studies was 45 mg/m2 with no evidence of delayed leukopenia. Intrapatient variability of toxicity was small; interpatient variability of toxicity was substantial and did not correlate with prior therapy. Because of the presence of delayed hematologic toxicity on repetitive dosing schedules, intravenous VZL should be given on a dosing schedule longer than 14 days. No antitumor activity was seen in this study.
