In order to investigate the use of radioimmunoassay of human chorionic somato-mammotrophin (HCS) for the evaluation of the placenta function, 502 pregnant women (660 assays) were examined. The patients were divided into groups: normal pregnancy, commencement of labour, threatened abortion, impending abortion, rhesus isosensitization, placenta praevia, diabetes, premature labour, pre-eclampsia, intrauterine fetal death, twins, large and small-for-babies, obesity, and prolonged pregnancy with or without fetal postmaturity or chronic fetal distress. The results obtained sustain the clinical application of HCS radioimmunoassay as an index of placental function in cases of physiological and pathological pregnancies.
