Notes: : The authors report on a retrospective study of the occurrence of chancroid in the city of Vienna during the past 10 years. After identifying two patients at the authors' department with chancroid in March 1988, the authors investigated the frequency with which this disease presented during the last 10 years. Of 32 patients, six presented between 1977 and 1980, and one patient in 1987. The remaining 25 patients were diagnosed within a 4-month period in 1981, suggesting a limited outbreak. The source of this infection could be traced to Turkey; infected prostitutes contributed to further spread in Vienna. All patients were treated successfully with sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Efficient control of this outbreak can be attributed to inpatient treatment of the prostitutes. Appropriate and timely treatment must be proceeded by careful and exact diagnosis of this disease whose clinical picture is constantly diverging from its classical form.

Notes: 45 patients (34 patients with PLE, 11 with phototoxic or photoallergic dermatitis) were photopatch tested to tiaprofenic acid. In 23 patients (51%), phototoxic reactions were found. Positive reactions appeared within 0.5 to 48 h of irradiation. Although each patient was irradiated with 2 different UVA light sources, with significantly different energy outputs (10 J/cm2 against 72 J/cm2), the intensity and duration of positive reactions was virtually the same. We found a considerably higher rate of positive reactions than other investigators, independent of the light energy delivered. None of the patients gave a history of previous tiaprofenic acid exposure.

Notes: We present a patient who developed skin lesions typical of disseminated superficial porokeratosis (DSP) while on immunosuppressive therapy for pemphigus foliaceus. Phototesting with artificial light sources did not have any effect on the DSP lesions. The literature describing occurrence of DSP on immunosuppression is reviewed and possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.

Notes: Sixty patients with port wine stains were treated with the argon laser and graded visually into four subjective categories for changes in skin colour. For objective quantitative evaluation a photoelectric colorimeter was used. Reproducible definition of the lightness of the lesions into numbers was obtained. Differentials in lightness between normal contralateral skin and the portwine stain before and after treatment were quantified for each individual. The objective evaluation revealed a statistically significant difference between the four categories (P〈0.05). The best clinical therapeutic effect was found to correlate with only 80–90% blanching. The average lightening obtained was 46.5%. Local heating of portwine stains in 12 patients showed no measurable darkening in the colour of the lesions, whereas the normal contralateral skin reacted with marked reddening. Determination of changes in lightness by photoelectric colorimetry provides an objective, quantitative means to evaluate the effects of laser treatment of port wine stains.

Notes: Summary Four female patients with Sudeck's atrophy (SA) were evaluated at our department. Sera of all patients were investigated for antibodies againstBorrelia burgdorferi. In all patients elevated IgG antibody titers and in one patient also elevated IgM titer were found. In one patient structures identical withB. burgdorferi could be detected on histological sections from the skin of the affected limb. Our data and those of other authors suggest that a spirochetal infection can be regarded as an important etiopathogenetic factor in the development of SA.
