Notes: Ge nanocrystal growth in amorphous silicon oxide film was studied using the transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The as-sputtered sample contained mainly GeO2 and Ge suboxides. GeO2 and/or suboxides dissociate when rapid thermal annealed and provide Ge for nanocrystal formation. Nanocrystals of similar size (∼60 Å in diameter) were obtained when annealed at 800 °C. Nanocrystals with diameters of 200–280 Å consisting of multiple twin structures near the Si–SiO2 interface were observed when annealed at 1000 °C. The twin structure was attributed to the enhanced diffusion of Ge at 1000 °C and the short annealing time. Our photoluminescence (PL) results show that the best PL response was obtained with samples that exhibit uniform nanocrystal size. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electron transport in nanowires of hydrogenated amorphous silicon recrystallized by electron beam annealing has been studied. Wire length dependent electrical characteristics have been measured at low temperatures. Evidence for single electron effects with I–V characteristics has been presented. Transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence data are used to support the electrical results. The Coulomb blockade effect is modeled as a combination of hopping conduction between a limited number of trapping sites in amorphous regions or at grain boundaries with additional Coulomb blockade effects as well as a confinement due to potential fluctuations arising from dopant distribution. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Raman characterization of germanium (Ge) nanocrystals embedded in amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiO2) films synthesized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) has been carried out. The samples were prepared by cosputtering Ge and SiO2 targets using a rf magnetron sputtering machine. Ge nanocrystals can only be obtained from samples sputtered with six pieces of Ge attached to the SiO2 target. For samples annealed at different RTA temperatures, the Raman spectra indicated a transition from amorphous to nanocrystalline Ge when annealed between 600 and 750 °C. The spectra were analyzed in terms of phonon confinement model and the estimated nanocrystal size was between 20 and 66 Å. A minimum annealing time of 160 s at 750 °C was necessary for Ge nanocrystal formation. Strong visible broadband photoluminescence was observed from the nanocrystals and the photoluminescence showed a blueshift with decrease in the nanocrystal size. The effect of compressive stress on nanocrystal growth was examined by varying the rampup and rampdown rates of the RTA process. The compressive stress was shown to affect the growth of the nanocrystals. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background  Allergy to natural rubber latex (NRL) proteins is a well-recognized health problem among subjects using protective gloves and products made of NRL. There is currently no information on NRL allergen levels in gloves used in Singapore. Objectives  This study aims to quantify the amount of specific allergens (Hev b 1, Hev b 3, Hev b 5 and Hev b 6.02) found in rubber gloves used in Singapore. It also aims to determine if these levels are above thresholds that may cause NRL allergy. It also compares the levels of these specific allergens in gloves used for different purposes, namely gloves used for examination purposes or for surgical procedures. Methods  Forty-nine rubber gloves were obtained from major hospitals and healthcare departments in Singapore and were analysed for their NRL allergen levels. FITkitTM, based on the enzyme immunometric assay technique, was used to determine the specific allergen levels of Hev b 1, Hev b 3, Hev b 5 and Hev b 6.02 in the gloves. Results  Examination gloves had higher NRL allergen content compared with surgical gloves, and powdered gloves had higher allergen content compared with nonpowdered gloves. Among the various allergens, Hev b 5 and Hev b 6.02 were present in larger quantities than Hev b 1 and Hev b 3. Only two of 19 (11%) surgical gloves had the sum of the four allergens (Hev b 1, Hev b 3, Hev b 5, Hev b 6.02) in excess of 1 µg g−1, which is believed to be a clinically relevant threshold. Among the examination gloves, 25 of 30 (83%) exceeded this level. Conclusions  This study shows that NRL allergen levels are present in the majority of examination gloves used by healthcare workers in Singapore at levels high enough to cause NRL allergy among sensitized persons. The information can serve as evidence for a possible requirement for manufacturers to produce gloves with low NRL allergen levels and to state the allergen level in gloves in the product information.

Notes: Summary This paper deals with outer approximation methods for solving possibly multiextremal global optimization problems. A general theorem on convergence is presented and new classes of outer approximation methods using polyhedral convex sets are derived. The underlying theory is then related to the cut map-separator theory of Eaves and Zangwill. Two constraint dropping strategies are deduced.

Notes: Abstract All the remnants of native vegetation in a 1680 km2 area of the central wheatbelt of Western Australia were assessed for use by two species of kangaroo (Western grey kangaroo Macropus fuliginosus and euro M. robustus). Use was determined from faecal pellet density. Densities over large areas (100 km2) varied with the amount of residual native vegetation in the area. The less the vegetation the lower was the faecal density, indicating that increased separation between remnants has led, over the 50–70 years since fragmentation, to lower kangaroo densities. The densities of kangaroos in 152 individual remnants of 〉2 ha were examined in relation to their physical attributes (e.g. area, edge length, distance to nearest remnant, presence of linkages and the vegetation types present), and to an index of isolation from human disturbance. Few remnants 〈2 ha were used by kangaroos. Canonical discriminant analysis showed that separation of remnants without kangaroos from those with kangaroos was associated with many of the attributes. Of these, the numbers of vegetation types and their proportions and the degree of isolation from human disturbance were of greatest importance. Regression analyses were done to obtain predictors of densities within remnants grouped according to the kangaroo species using the remnants. These showed that the importance of attributes differed for different groupings. Isolation from human disturbance was the most important factor for remnants that had either species, but not for the larger ones that had both species. For euros, density increased with the rank of the linkage to other remnants and decreased with the percentage of the remnant in open woodland. For Western grey kangaroos, rank for distance to nearest remnant was significant. Since the study area is representative of a much larger area, the findings should have wide applicability.

Notes: Abstract The case of a 70-year-old woman with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is presented. MRI of the head showed widespread miliary foci of haemorrhage within the cerebrum and cerebellum, with some additional linear lesions within the cerebral cortex and patchy lesions in the white matter. This is in contrast to the more usual pattern of intracranial haemorrhage in CAA, i. e., a lobar haematoma.
