    Notes: Screening of a macroion such as a charged solid particle, a charged membrane, double helix DNA, or actin by multivalent counterions is considered. Small colloidal particles, charged micelles, short or long polyelectrolytes can play the role of multivalent counterions. Due to strong lateral repulsion at the surface of the macroion such multivalent counterions form a strongly-correlated liquid, with the short-range order resembling that of a Wigner crystal. These correlations create additional binding of multivalent counterions to the macroion surface with binding energy larger than kBT. As a result even for a moderate concentration of multivalent counterions in the solution, their total charge at the surface of the macroion exceeds the bare macroion charge in absolute value. Therefore, the net charge of the macroion inverts its sign. In the presence of a high concentration of monovalent salt the absolute value of inverted charge can be larger than the bare one. This strong inversion of charge can be observed by electrophoresis or by direct counting of multivalent counterions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A theory of condensation and resolubilization of a dilute DNA solution with growing concentration of multivalent cations, N, is suggested. It is based on a new theory of screening of a macroion by multivalent cations, which shows that due to strong cation correlations at the surface of DNA the net charge of DNA changes sign at some small concentration of cations N0. DNA condensation takes place in the vicinity of N0, where absolute value of the DNA net charge is small and the correlation induced short range attraction dominates the Coulomb repulsion. At N〉N0 positive DNA should move in the opposite direction in an electrophoresis experiment. From comparison of our theory with experimental values of condensation and resolubilization thresholds for DNA solution containing Spe4+, we obtain that N0=3.2 mM and that the energy of DNA condensation per nucleotide is 0.07 kBT. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The phase diagram of a water solution of DNA and oppositely charged spherical macroions is studied. DNA winds around spheres to form beads-on-a-string complexes resembling the chromatin 10 nm fiber. At small enough concentration of spheres these "artificial chromatin" complexes are negative, while at large enough concentrations of spheres the charge of DNA is inverted by the adsorbed spheres. Charges of complexes stabilize their solutions. In the plane of concentrations of DNA and spheres the phases with positive and negative complexes are separated by another phase, which contains the condensate of neutral DNA–spheres complexes. Thus, when the concentration of spheres grows, DNA–spheres complexes experience condensation and resolubilization (or reentrant condensation). Phenomenological theory of the phase diagram of reentrant condensation and charge inversion is suggested. Parameters of this theory are calculated by microscopic theory. It is shown that an important part of the effect of a monovalent salt on the phase diagram can be described by the nontrivial renormalization of the effective linear charge density of DNA wound around a sphere, due to the Onsager–Manning condensation. We argue that our phenomenological phase diagram or reentrant condensation is generic to a large class of strongly asymmetric electrolytes. Possible implications of these results for the natural chromatin are discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Anthocyanins from red raspberry juice concentrates were extracted with acidified ethanol and methanol and separated by high performance liquid chromatography. Six anthocyanin peaks were identified as cyanidin-3-sophoroside (cy-3-sop), cyanidin-3-glucorutinoside (cy-3-glru), cyanidin-3-glucoside (cy-3-gl), cyanidin-3-rutinoside (cy-3-ru), pelargonidin-3-sophoroside (pg-3-sop), and pelargonidin-3-glu-corutinoside (pg-3-glru). Relative proportions of individual anthocyanins were determined by comparing peak areas. The proportions of cy-3-sop, cy-3-glru and cy-3-gl in particular changed greatly on storage for 3 mo at + 20°C. Minor changes occurred when the raspberry juice concentrate was stored at −20°C.

    Notes: Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was used to evaluate the genetic variation among cultivated chickpea and wild Cicer relatives. In total, 214 marker loci were assessed, of which 211 were polymorphic (98.6%) across the 95 accessions that represented 17 species of Cicer. The genetic variation within a species was highest in C. pinnatifidum followed by C. reticulatum and lowest in C. macracanthum. Three main species groups were identified by UPGMA clustering using Nei's pair-wise distance calculations. Group I included the cultivated species C. arietinum, C. reticulatum and C. echinospermum. Within this group, C. reticulatum accessions were clustered closest to the C. arietinum cultivars ‘Lasseter’, ‘Kaniva’ and ‘Bumper’, supporting the hypothesis that C. reticulatum is the most probable progenitor of the cultivated species. Cicer bijugum, C. judaicum and C. pinnatifidum were clustered together creating group II. Group III contained all nine perennial species assessed and two annual species C. yamashitae and C. cuneatum. The genetic distance detected between group I and group III (0.13) was equivalent to the genetic distance detected between group I and group II (the primary and annual tertiary species, respectively; 0.14). This indicated that the perennial tertiary species may be as valuable for increasing variation to incorporate novel germplasm in the cultigen as the annual tertiary species.

    Notes: In this paper the results of a study conducted on the culture-based fisheries in small (ranging from 2 to 160 ha), farmer-managed reservoirs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces in the northern highland region of Vietnam, for the production cycles of 1997/98, 98/99 and 99/00 are presented. The small reservoirs are leased to small farmers by the provincial authorities for fishery activities, and all lessees adopt culture-based fisheries when fingerlings of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and mrigal (Cirrihinus mrigala) are stocked between March and mid-April each year and harvested, using large seine nets, after approximately 11–12 months. The mean yields from reservoirs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces in 97/98, 98/99 and 99/00 production cycles were 251, 332 and 253, and 331, 372 and 210 kg ha−1 respectively. There were major differences in the fish productivity in the reservoirs in the two Provinces, and in a reservoir between culture cycles. The stocking strategies appeared to be rather ad hoc, being determined by the availability of seed stock and the financial status of the lessees. Accordingly, there was no apparent consistent trend in the improvement of yields from the culture-based fishery practice throughout the growth cycles. The fish yields in reservoirs in each Province were significantly related to reservoir area (exponentially) and to mean weight of stocked fish and conductivity (logarithmically). Of the stocked fish, the highest returns were obtained with mrigal and bighead carp, which collectively contributed 〉 50% to the harvest. The return from common carp was the lowest. The mean growth rate of grass carp (2.7 g day−1), followed by bighead carp (2.0 g day−1) was the highest in reservoirs in YenBai Province, bighead carp (4.0 g day−1) followed by grass carp (3.2 g day−1) was the highest in ThaiNguyen Province. The seed stocked on average accounted for 65% and 48% of the total operating costs in YenBai and ThaiNguyen Provinces, and the mean cost:benefit ratio of the culture-based fishery in the two Provinces was 0.35 and 0.37 respectively. The culture-based fishery on average contributed about 28% to the gross income of a farmer lessee.
