Notes: This paper reports the results of a pulsed optical–optical double resonance study of three new low energy Rydberg states and the previously known but not rotationally analyzed F 2Π state [C. A. Fowler, Phys. Rev. 59, 645 (1941)] of the CaF molecule. The v=0 levels of these four electronic states are in the energy region 36 000–39 800 cm−1 (n*≈3-4). Molecular constants (A,p,q) or γ, and B were measured for all of the states. The F' 2Σ+ state at 36 125 cm−1 (n*=3.177) is particularly important because it is the lowest and previously unobserved member of the 'p' 2Σ+ Rydberg series. The assignment of the F' state as the lowest member of the 'p' 2Σ+ series corrects a mistaken assignment of the C' 2Σ+ state as the lowest member of the 'p' 2Σ+ series [J. E. Murphy, J. M. Berg, A. J. Merer, N. A. Harris, and R. W. Field, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 1861 (1990)].

Notes: Partial reactions in the overall chain elongation of palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA by mouse brain microsomes have been analyzed. The rate of the initial condensation reaction between palmitoyl-CoA and malonyl-CoA was more than 5 times greater than the rate obtained with stearoyl-CoA, and in both cases good agreement between condensation and overall chain elongation rates was observed.By contrast, both β-hydroxyoctadecanoyl-CoA and β-hydroxyeicosanoyl-CoA were quite rapidly dehydrated by brain microsomes at similar rates. Similar results were obtained with 2-trans-octadecenoyl-CoA and 2-trans-eicosenoyl-CoA in which both substrates were rapidly reduced at nearly the same rate in the presence of NADPH. In all cases, intermediate reactions subsequent to condensation were much more rapid than overall chain elongation. These results suggest that the mechanism of malonyl-CoA-dependent fatty acid chain elongation in brain microsomes is similar to that observed in other tissues, and are consistent with an overall regulation of chain elongation mediated primarily by the initial condensation reaction.

Notes: Abstract— By means of crossed Immunoelectrophoresis the concentrations of 7 brain-specific antigens have been investigated during the ontogenic development of normal and Quaking mice. Two proteins, the glial fibrillary acidic protein and the brain-specific membrane protein D5 were found to be strongly increased in mutant brains. The synaptosomal antigen synaptin (Cl), the 14-3-2 protein of neuronal cytoplasm, and the neuronal membrane antigens D1, D2 and D3 were all present at normal levels in mutant brains.

Notes: The failure to integrate training and socialization research has represented a significant shortcoming in our understanding of the effectiveness of organizational practices within these two domains. A survey of major British organizations was therefore undertaken to evaluate current practices in induction training, programme evaluation, and personnel practitioners' attitudes to induction and socialization. A random sample of 300 companies was surveyed using a questionnaire of induction practices for newcomers recently graduated from college, to which 100 responded. Descriptive results indicate that over 90% of organizations conduct formalized induction programmes in the early stages of newcomer socialization. Evaluation methods — trainee questionnaires, supervisory feedback, self-reports, peer reviews, and pre- and post-programme tests — were found to be differentially popular. Practitioners in organizations relying solely on questionnaires were found to be significantly more satisfied with the programme and the induction process generally than those using pre- and post-course tests in addition to trainee questionnaires. Results of hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that use of peer reviews and tests were related to company biographical variables and training attitudinal variables. Implications for graduate socialization, induction training practices, and training evaluation are discussed.

Notes: Background:  Although the dose of 400 mg/kg body weight intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) every 3–4 weeks is now standard for treating patients with common variable immune deficiency, studies demonstrating its long-term benefits over low 200 mg/kg dose and its effects on infectious subsets (upper vs lower respiratory vs non-respiratory infections) are rare. Methods:  All patients from a single center with the diagnosis of common variable immune deficiency and whose clinical chart was available during three successive therapeutic periods [a pre-IVIG replacement period, a low-dose (200 mg/kg every 3 weeks) and a standard-dose replacement period (400 mg/kg every 3 weeks)] were screened retrospectively. Results:  Seven patients followed up for a total of 116 patient-years over the three defined periods of observation were recruited. When compared with low-dose therapy, standard-dose intravenous immunoglobulin therapy raised trough IgG levels from 4.3 to 6.5 g/l and significantly decreased the overall frequency of infections, with marked effects on lower respiratory tract and severe infection number. In contrast, non-respiratory and upper respiratory infections were, in comparison, resistant to therapy. Conclusions:  Overall, these data support the use of standard-dose 400 mg/kg intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, despite the high cost, to raise trough IgG levels to 5–7 g/l, but underlines that some categories of infectious events (non-respiratory, upper respiratory) may need parallel surgical or pharmacological approaches to be optimally prevented or treated.

Notes: Although the alkaline earth–monohalide compounds, MX, have been extensively studied, their ionization potentials to MX+ are only known to within a few tenths of an eV. Using an improved electron impact ionization potential measurement to assist in arranging spectroscopic vibronic band origins into Rydberg series, we report high precision ionization potential measurements for CaF and BaF to be IP(CaF)=5.8270±0.0006 eV and IP(BaF)=4.8034±0.0004 eV. The synergism between the electron impact method and the spectroscopic method is detailed, and the minimum accuracy required of the electron impact data is assessed.

Notes: Previous studies have suggested that head losses associated with the application of the electromagnetic borehole flowmeter (EBF) can have important and detrimental effects on the use of the instrument for measurement of hydraulic conductivity (K) profiles. Head losses associated with flow through the meter may cause bypass flow around the packer if the well is gravel packed. In any type of well, changing head losses with meter position can cause changes in flow into the well that are not related directly to the K distribution. Such flow changes, or redistribution, can cause errors in the calculation of the K profile.Numerical simulations, based on measured head losses, indicate that bypass flow in gravel packed systems increases with increasing flow rate through the meter, increasing gravel pack conductivity, and increasing gravel pack thickness. Ideally, the EBF should not be used in gravel packed wells, due to the occurrence of bypass flow.Investigations into the flow redistribution phenomenon indicate that the top portion of the aquifer is where the greatest over-estimation of K occurs. The portion of the well below the flowmeter is isolated from the observed drawdown as measured from the surface. In this region, the well experiences a reduced drawdown, which differs from the observed drawdown by an amount equal to the head loss at that meter position. Flow redistribution causes a more pronounced effect in more highly conductive mediums and may be almost negligible in mediums of low conductivity.

Notes: The genetically selected long attack latency (LAL) and short attack latency (SAL) mice differ in a wide variety of behavioural traits and display differences in the serotonergic system and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA)-axis. Serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) was used to generate a hippocampal expression profile of almost 30 000 genes in LAL and SAL mice. Using SAGE, we found differential expression of 191 genes. Among these were genes involved in growth, signal transduction, and cell metabolism. The SAGE study was supported by GeneChip analysis (Affymetrix). Strikingly, both SAGE and GeneChips showed a higher expression of numerous cytoskeleton genes, such as cofilin and several tubulin isotypes in LAL mice. LAL mice also showed a higher expression of several calmodulin-related genes and genes encoding components of a MAPK cascade, namely raf-related oncogene and ERK2. The findings were confirmed by in situ hybridization. Our results of differential expression of cytoskeleton and signal transduction genes therefore suggest differential regulation of the raf/ERK pathway that may be related to structural differences in the hippocampus of LAL and SAL mice. As stress-related disorders, such as depression, are also linked to differential regulation of the HPA-axis and the serotonergic system and are associated with altered hippocampal morphology, differential regulation of these genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases.
