Notes: Summary The effect of long-lasting electric currents on the Lorenzinian ampullae at constant temperatures between 7 and 25 °C was investigated in the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). Steady state neural impulse patterns in single afferent units were analyzed by plotting interval length histograms and computing mean values and standard deviations for currents between −100 and +100 nA. The mean values depended on temperature and on current strength; the relative standard deviations remained almost constant (ca. 20–30%). Negative currents, inserted at the orifice of the ampullary canal, led to higher, and positive currents to lower, steady impulse rates in the whole temperature range investigated here. This static component of electrosensitivity again disappeared at higher currents (of 50 nA and more; electric overstimulation). The maximum static response was two orders of magnitude less than the maximum dynamic component of electroreception. The electrosensitivity depended on temperature: the ampullae were most sensitive to electric currents between 13 and 19°C. The maximal neural activity at 19°C was not shifted to higher or lower temperatures by electric stimulation. A constant equivalent of electric and thermal stimulation throughout the tested temperature and current range could not be found.

Notes: Summary In single-fibre preparations the afferent discharges from prepolarized ampullae of Lorenzini responding to graded temperature steps were investigated in the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). The transformation characteristics of the ampullary receptors, especially their differential thermosensitivity interfering with electrosensitivity, were analyzed. Prepolarization significantly influenced the dynamic component of differential thermosensitivity, while the static component remained practically unchanged. Hyperpolarization reduced positive and negative dynamic thermal responses: depolarization amplified them. Biological consequences of this bimodal interference for receptor transformation of superimposed thermal and electric stimuli and for decoding afferent ampullary impulse patterns are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In cats afferent impulses from splanchnic and vagus nerve preparations were studied. In each splanchnic nerve serving the stomach or the adjacent part of the duodenum, cold-sensitive afferents could be recorded. There were also numerous mechanosensitive fibers originating from stomach, intestine, mesentery and the region of blood vessels. No thermal afferents were found in the vagus nerve. The cardiovascular and respiratory myelinated afferents were insensitive to thermal stimuli.

Notes: Summary Afferent responses in single-fibre and multi-fibre preparations of the n. infraorbitalis leading from mechanosensitive receptors of the cat's vibrissae were investigated by application of different isotonic solutions of ionised calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Under quasi-stationary as well as under time-variable conditions the doseresponse studies of calcium and potassium revealed a non-linear, depressive action on synchronised impulse patterns as far as the spike rate and the spike phase was concerned. In coincidence with the inhibition of neural activity the impulses were shifted to a higher phase angle and a considerable instability of the trigger time point was observed. Contrarily, sodium had an activating effect on the discharge combined with higher spike rates, lower phase angles and a stabilising influence on the synchronisation of afferent impulse patterns. After injection of magnesium no significant modification was found.

Notes: Summary Phase-frequency response of afferent impulse patterns leading from pressure-sensitive receptors of the cat's vibrissae was investigated and neural activity recorded from 37 single-fibre and multi-fibre preparations of the nervus infraorbitalis. In the lower frequency range (f〈10 Hz) action potentials precede the oscillatory stimulus at the vibrissae to about a quarter of a sinusoidal period. Thus, they occur within the phase of maximal positive velocity. In the medium frequency range (10 Hz≤f≤100 Hz) impulse patterns are nearly in phase with the input stimulus, whereas there is an extensive phase lag of the afferents increasing rapidly with frequency in the higher frequency range (f〉100 Hz). Furthermore, the phase-frequency response of this sense organ is dependent on the stimulus amplitude cause of non-linearities in its transformation characteristics.

Notes: Summary Afferent responses in single-fibre and multi-fibre preparations from isolated ampullae of Lorenzini to various concentrations of ionic calcium (from 0.2 g/l to 5.0 g/l) were investigated in the dogfish (Scylliorhinus canicula). At constant temperature (12.3° C), calcium concentrations between 0.2 and 1.6 g/l were practically ineffective. Concentrations between 1.8 and 5.0 g/l inhibited the static impulse discharge for time periods up to several minutes depending on the calcium charge. Concentration and diffusion parameters were decisive for the amount as well as the temporal course of this inhibition. Additional thermal or mechanical stimulation led to an answer superimposed on the effects of calcium. Calcium-free fluids produced a slight increase in average impulse rate.

Notes: Summary At different operating points of their steady state characteristics, about 12% of single-fibre afferents from isolated ampullae of Lorenzini in the dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula) answering graded temperature steps in the sense of cold receptors at first, reversed the direction of their differential temperature sensitivity. During this process no significant differences in their impulse patterns as well as in the parameters of the single spike potential itself were observed. From a second group of afferents, only an inversed dynamic response (overshoot of neural activity after a warm stimulus and silent period after a cold stimulus) could be recorded. The reversed responses to temperature cannot be explained by a possible shift in electrical or mechanical stimulus parameters.
