    Notes: We have studied the dielectric properties of cement mortars, with water/cement ratios between 0.5 and 0.78, in the frequency range 10−3≤f≤107 Hz. The dielectric response can be modeled by an equivalent circuit incorporating electrode polarization and bulk conduction. The bulk dc conductance and the amplitude of a constant phase element describing the dispersive part of the bulk response display characteristic dependencies on the water content of the samples. The power-law exponent of the constant phase element is independent of water content and can be related to the fractal dimension of the pore surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract Thirty-six patients were evaluated after having continent ileostomies for 16 to 20 years. Follow-up included clinical examination, response to a questionnaire, blood tests, and radiologic studies of the gallbladder. In addition, reservoir biopsies from 15 patients were examined. The patients were in excellent general health, all but one having gained weight postoperatively. There was no increased risk for gallstone formation or for urinary tract stone development. Although 11 of the 36 patients had reservoirs that were not provided with a valve, 92 percent of all patients were continent. Working capacity was normal in most patients and no harmful effects of the reservoir were revealed by morphologic or biochemical studies. In conclusion, no deleterious long-term effects were found as a result of the continent ileostomy.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Des questionnaires ont été envoyés à 48 opérés d'iléostomie concernant leur vie sexuelle avant et après la conversion de leur iléostomie classique en une iléostomie continente. Quarante-deux patients (88%) ont répondu au questionnaire, 29 étaient du sexe feminin. En réponse à la question concernant leur vie sexuelle, 98% ont répondu qu'ils se trouvaient quelque peu embarrassés, peu certains d'eux mêmes ou même inhibés après l'iléostomie conventionnelle, alors que 24% seulement se trouvaient gênés dans leur vie sexuelle après la conversion en iléostomie continente. Quatre-vingt-cinq pour-cent déclarèrent que l'iléostomie conventionnelle avait une influence négative sur l'image corporelle qu'ils se faisaient d'eux mêmes, alors que seulement 5% avaient cette sensation après la conversion. Quatrevingt-cinq pour-cent de tous les malades constatèrent que la qualité de leur vie sexuelle s'était améliorée après cette conversion. Ces résultats suggèrent que l'iléostomie conventionnelle influence la vie sexuelle plus qu'on ne le reconnait généralement et que la conversion en iléostomie continente améliore la qualité de la vie sexuelle chez ces opérés.
    Notes: Abstract To compare ileostomists' sexual life before and after conversion from a conventional spout to a continent pouch ileostomy, questionnaires were sent to 48 ileostomists with experience with both types of ileostomy. Forty-two patients (88%) returned their questionnaires; 29 were women. In answer to the question about the effect of their ileostomy on their sexual performance, 98% replied that they had sometimes felt embarrassed, uncertain, or inhibited because of the conventional ileostomy, whereas only 24% felt so after conversion to a continent ileostomy. Eighty-five percent felt that the conventional ileostomy negatively influenced their body image, whereas only 5% considered this to be the case after conversion to continent ileostomy. Eighty-five percent of the patients claimed that the quality of their sexual life had improved after conversion to continent ileostomy. The results suggest that a conventional ileostomy influences sexual life more than is generally recognized, and that conversion to continent ileostomy can improve the quality of sexual life in such patients.

    Description / Table of Contents: Resume Une étude microstructurale de mortiers préparés à partir de ciment à faible teneur en alcali et en C3A ainsi que de cendres volantes de classe F (tous deux d’origine suédoise) a été menée en se servant du microscope électronique à balayage et de la technique d’analyse de rayons X à dispersion d’énergie. Les phases supplémentaires étaient étudiées par thermogravimétrie et analyse thermique différentielle. Normalement, les critaux de CH croissent dans la zone de transition en sorte que leur axe est parallèle à la surface du granulat (ou le plan de clivage (0 0 1) perpendiculaire à la surface). En croissant le CH recouvre les cendres volantes, ce qui réduit la quantité de CH orienté à l’interface pâte-granulat. La diminution de CH, très importante après 28 jours, semble dépendre surtout de la réaction entre les cristaux de CH et la phase vitreuse des cendres volantes. Au début de l’hydratation, l’addition de cendres volantes affaiblit la zone d’interface entre la pâte et le granulat en réduisant les points de contact. Le rapport eau-ciment local est aussi augmenté. Une fois que la réaction des cendres volantes commence, la situation s’améliore de façon significative. Afin d’augmenter la réactivité des cendres volantes, on a ajouté du gypse. Les résultats démontrent que, bien que le gypse puisse accélérer la réaction des cendres volantes, la formation de produits de réaction, ainsi que les avantages, dépendent de la quantité totale de gypse dans la pâte.
    Notes: Abstract A microstructural study of mortars prepared with a low-alkali, low-C3A cement and a Class F fly ash, both of Swedish origin, was carried out using the scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analytical technique. Supplementary phase analyses were made by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis. Normally, CH crystals in the transition zone grow with their c axis parallel (or the (0 0 1) cleavage plane perpendicular) to the aggregate surface. The encapsulation of the fly ash particles by the growing CH reduces the amount of orientated CH at the aggregate-paste interface. The growth mechanism of these crystals is discussed. The reduction of CH, most significant after 28 days of hydration, is mainly due to the reaction of CH with the fly ash glass phase. Initially, the replacement of cement by fly ash weakens the paste-aggregate interfacial zone due to reduction of contact points, and increases the local water-to-cement ratio. This, however, improves significantly when the fly ash has reacted. In order to enhance the reaction of fly ash, extra gypsum was added. The results show that gypsum can accelerate the fly ash reaction, but the products formed, and the beneficial effects of gypsum, are mainly determined by the total amount of gypsum in the paste.

    Notes: Abstract The circumpolar boreal biomes coverca. 2 109 ha of the northern hemisphere and containca. 800 Pg C in biomass, detritus, soil, and peat C pools. Current estimates indicate that the biomes are presently a net C sink of 0.54 Pg C yr−1. Biomass, detritus and soil of forest ecosystems (includingca. 419 Pg peat) containca. 709 Pg C and sequester an estimated 0.7 Pg C yr−1. Tundra and polar regions store 60–100 Pg C and may recently have become a net source of 0.17 Pg C yr−1. Forest product C pools, including landfill C derived from forest biomass, store less than 3 Pg C but increase by 0.06 Pg C yr−1. The mechanisms responsible for the present boreal forest net sink are believed to be continuing responses to past changes in the environment, notably recovery from the little ice-age, changes in forest disturbance regimes, and in some regions, nutrient inputs from air pollution. Even in the absence of climate change, the C sink strength will likely be reduced and the biome could switch to a C source. The transient response of terrestrial C storage to climate change over the next century will likely be accompanied by large C exchanges with the atmosphere, although the long-term (equilibrium) changes in terrestrial C storage in future vegetation complexes remains uncertain. This transient response results from the interaction of many (often non-linear) processes whose impacts on future C cycles remain poorly quantified. Only a small part of the boreal biome is directly affected by forest management and options for mitigating climate change impacts on C storage are therefore limited but the potential for accelerating the atmospheric C release are high.
