Notes: Abstract TheK andL x-rays emitted in the decay of235Np have been studied with high resolution Ge(HP) and Si(Li) detectors in coincidence, in order to obtain theL 2 andL 3 subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields atZ=92. The results are:v 2=0.630±0.036, ω2=0.560±0.033,f 23=0.147±0.010, and ω3=0.481±0.029. Results for theL 1 subshell were derived from singles spectra, by assuming a value off 13 of 0.67, and are:v 1=0.54±0.04, ω1=0.21±0.04, andf 12〈0.07. With the same assumption, theL 1/K electron capture ratio and decay energyQ ec for235Np were found to be 29.0±3.6 and 123.6±0.7 keV, respectively. RelativeL x-ray intensities forZ=92 also were measured and are compared with the theory of Scofield and with recent diffraction experiments. Electron ejection from theL shell during235Np decay has been studied byL x-ray-L x-ray coincidences and found to occur with a probability of (1.3±1.0) × 10−4 per disintegration.

Notes: Abstract The total probabilityf 23 for theL 2–L 2 Coster-Kronig transition atZ=96 was measured by theL α−K α1,2 x-ray coincidence technique with a249Cf radioactive source. The value at Z=96 was found to bef 23=0.209±0.022 (2σ, 95% confidence). This result is in agreement within the 2σ error limits with previous measurements which range from 0.188 to 0.226, and this spread cannot be reduced by improvements in the experimental technique primarily because of the large correction required for the effect of nuclear cascading in249Cf decay.

Notes: Abstract MeanL-shell x-ray fluorescence yields $$(\bar \omega _L )$$ have been measured by observingK andL x-ray spectra emitted in the decay of109Cd,145Pm, and153Gd with a high resolution Si(Li) x-ray detector. The results forZ=47, 60, and 63 are as follows: $$\bar \omega _L $$ =0.0425±0.0064, 0.131±0.017, and 0.142±0.023, respectively. Additional values of $$\bar \omega _L $$ from this laboratory atZ=55, 56, 57, 59, and 65 are also tabulated as are previous experimental values atZ=47, 60, and 63. For comparison, theoretical estimates of $$\bar \omega _L $$ were computed using theoreticalL-subshell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields, together with subshell vacancy distributions calculated from the literature. The theoretical estimates atZ=47, 60, and 63, based on the subshell calculations of Chen, Crasemann, and Kostroun, agree well with experiment.

Notes: Abstract The total transition probabilityf 23 for theL 2-L 3 Coster-Kronig transition probability atZ=80, 81, 82, and 92 was measured withL α x-ray coincidences between high resolution Si(Li) and Ge(HP) x-ray detectors and a dual-parameter multichannel coincidence system. TheL α gating technique for observing theK x-ray coincidence spectrum was carefully checked and found to be equivalent to the method of observing theL x-ray spectrum with $$K_{\alpha _{1,2} } $$ gates, when proper corrections are applied. The values off 23 found are 0.123±0.012, 0.109±0.011, 0.105±0.011, and 0.146±0.018 atZ=80, 81, 82, and 92, respectively. These values, together with all previously published values in the region 57≦Z≦96, are critically evaluated and a group of “best values” selected for comparison with theory. The agreement is quite good in the region 63≦Z≦83. The independentparticle model employing a Green-Sellin-Zachor potential used by Chen and Crasemann predicts values off 23 which are too large compared with experiment in the high-Z region, whereas the theoretical predictions of McGuire using an approximate Herman-Skilman potential are too low. However, the screened nonrelativistic hydrogenic results of Chen, Crasemann, and Kostroun are in satisfactory agreement with the experiments. The experimental result atZ=92 indicates that theL 2-L 3 M 4 transition is at or below threshold and contributes little or no intensity to the value of f23.
