Notes: Ab initio molecular orbital theory has been used to study the controversial potential energy surface of the ethylenedione anion C2O−2. Seven different basis sets, the largest being triple zeta plus two polarization functions and one set of higher angular momentum functions (TZ2Pf) in quality, were utilized in conjunction with five correlated methods, the highest-level being coupled-cluster theory including single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)]. Equilibrium geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies of the predicted 2Au trans-bent ground state are presented. The Renner–Teller potential energy surface resulting from the splitting of the doubly degenerate linear 2Πu transition state into the nondegenerate bent 2Au and linear 2Bu surfaces is also characterized by means of energy predictions for these three states. Several recent peak assignments in the experimental spectrum, as well as the isotopic shifts associated with them, are supported by theory. A correct description of the potential energy hypersurface is obtained only by application of large basis sets in conjunction with methods including high-level treatment of electron correlation effects. The TZP+/CCSD(T) methodology predicts the OCC bond angle to be 146.5°. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A novel fully CMOS circuit for electronic telephone line adaption is described. In the on-hook state the circuit operates in micropower condition, dissipates only 5 μA, and is capable of generating the supply voltage required for retention of data stored on external RAM. In the off-hook state the circuit is boosted into the normal operation mode and is able to drive external bipolar transistors to synthesize the line impedance. The dc and the ac line impedances are set with external components, thus permitting the fulfillment of different PTT specifications. The circuit also performs line signal extraction and transmission, both for voice and DTMF. The dc line voltage is monitored, and a supervision block generates a precise reset signal when the line voltage drops out. The circuit has been integrated in a CMOS P-well 3-μm double-poly single-metal technology; the silicon area is 6 mm2.

Notes: Abstract Kantian virtue can be construed as a condition of an agent which secures adherence to the requirements of morality in the face of the ever-present possibility of inner conflict with counter-ethical considerations. This paper claims that this conception of virtue does not fit in well with one essential characteristic of the virtuous agent; that he or she is attentive to the well-being of others. After some preliminary remarks about virtue-related evaluations, the paper criticises the Kantian conception of virtue in the light of certain characteristics of ethical attentiveness. The paper concludes by developing a notion of ethical habituation which includes the training of attention.

Notes: Conclusion If I have understood Pearson's use of “a practice” correctly my main objection to his project is that it gives the current practices of teaching far too much normative force over the educational beliefs of teachers. While the principles of practical reasoning advocated by Pearson may serve to test the coherence of the various beliefs which are part of current practice, they do not suffice to test the reasonableness of such beliefs. To do this we need, at least for some of these beliefs, to draw upon the resources made available to us by such theoretical practices as psychology, philosophy, history, etc. None of these, of course, nullifies the significance of regarding teaching as a practice. Indeed, such a conception is a forceful reminder that the theoretical practices which are concerned with education need to focus on current teaching practices if they are to guard against the sort of empty rationalism despised by Oakeshott, while saying something to the teaching profession. This will not give us an educational theory, but rather theoretical perspectives on teaching as a practice.

Notes: Ab initio molecular orbital theory has been used to study the various structures of the SiGeH2 system. Utilizing the DZP basis set in conjunction with five correlated methods, the most intricate being coupled-cluster theory including single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)], a study of the potential energy surface of the SiGeH2 system was conducted. Equilibrium geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, dipole moments, and infrared intensities of the nonplanar dibridged structure, asymmetrical monobridged structures, vinylidenelike structures, trans structure, and linear structure are presented. As anticipated, the dibridged structure was the global minimum, with the novel cis monobridges and a vinylidenelike structure being low lying minima as well, lying within 10 kcal mol-1 of the dibridged global minimum. The two monobridged isomers are predicted to be the third and fourth most stable minima. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
