    Notes: Phylogeographic reconstructions using mitochondrial DNA sequences from both the control region and the cytochrome b gene demonstrated that two disjunct populations be recognized as Trachurus murphyi and Trachurus symmetricus. The species have been isolated for at least 250 000 years.

    Notes: Scartichthys viridis maintains a herbivorous diet following recruitment to rocky intertidal areas, where it consumes almost exclusively macroalgae. The sheet–like green macroalgae Ulva and Enteromorpha were the main items consumed by individuals 〈130 mm LT. The tough branching red macroalga Gelidium made the bulk of the gut contents of specimens 〉220 mm LT, Ulva being consumed to a much lesser extent. Further, Gelidium increased in importance in the total gut contents during ontogeny. In contrast, both small (70–120 mm LT) and medium–sized (140–210 mm LT) S. viridis individuals preferred Ulva in the laboratory. It is suggested that the increasing consumption of Gelidium along the ontogeny of S. viridis results from the limited availability of Ulva in the field. Large S. viridis individuals possessed longer guts relative to their body length, in comparison with small individuals.

    Notes: On the central coast of Chile, distribution of body size in Graus nigra varied with tidal pool height. With the objective of determining whether environmental temperature is one of the possible causes which explains the observed distribution pattern, two behavioural responses were analysed during an experimental period of increasing water temperature: number of opercular movements (an indirect measure of energy expenditure) and activity levels. The interactions of temperature × time and body size × time had a significant effect on the number of opercular movements. At low temperatures (13–15° C), large fish reached a maximum number of opercular movements, while small fish reached a maximum only at high temperatures (23–25° C). The interaction temperature × time had a significant effect on activity levels of different body sizes. In general, large fish appeared to be less active than small fish, however, at very high temperatures (24–26° C) all individuals increased their activity levels. These data indicate that small fish are acclimatized to live in a wider range of temperatures (13–23° C), and, for fish of all body sizes, the highest temperatures (23–26° C) probably constitute a suboptimal microhabitat. Strong territoriality was observed, with large individuals displacing smaller individuals. These data suggest that temperature is an important factor in explaining why large individuals are not present in high tidal pools (high temperatures), whereas territoriality explains why small individuals are not in low tidal pools (habitat of large individuals).

    Notes: Abstract Six of the nine described species of the mole crab genus Emerita are distributed in the Americas, two [E. analoga (Stimpson, 1857) and E. rathbunae Schmitt, 1935] on the west coast, and four [E. benedicti Schmitt, 1935, E. brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935, E. portoricensis Schmitt, 1935 and E. talpoida (Say, 1817)] on the east. The presence of an extended planktonic larval stage in all Emerita species suggests high dispersal potential and the possibility of extensive gene flow among conspecific populations. Two taxa were sampled to study the extent of gene flow between widely separated conspecific populations: E. analoga (California and Chile) and E. talpoida (Massachusetts, South Carolina, and the west coast of Florida), while all other taxa were characterized from a single location. Portions of two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) were sequenced. For data analysis, approximately 500 bp (COI) and 400 bp (16S rRNA) were examined. Estimated genetic divergence of 5.41% in COI between E. talpoida populations sampled from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast, and 3.47% between E. analoga sampled in Chile and California, indicates that in both cases there has been no recent gene flow between disjunct populations. Additional molecular and morphological studies are necessary to decide whether disjunct populations should be accorded specific status. We predict that many marine invertebrates with antitropical distributions similar to E. analoga may consist of sibling species. In contrast to relationships inferred earlier from distribution patterns, parsimony analyses of both COI and 16S rRNA data yield similar phylogenetic trees in which E. analoga is separated from a clade composed of other species in the Americas; a bootstrap value (67%) in the COI inferred tree marginally supports the separation, but the same tree topology with a higher bootstrap value (84%) is obtained with 16S rRNA sequence data. Genetic divergence among the taxa indicates that the Emerita species constitute an old group and that distribution of species has been modified by past climatic and geological events.

    Notes: Abstract Aplodactylus punctatus is a temperate berbivorous fish that changes from an omnivorous to a herbivorous diet and increases its ability ot assimilate algae as it grows. To investigate whether this dietary shift is related to size-specific differences in energetic demands imposed by metabolism and the amount of assimilated energy, oxygen consumption ( $$V_{O_2 }$$ ) was determined experimentally in 12 specimens ranging in size from 62 to 545 g. $$V_{O_2 }$$ increased allometrically with body size from 8.41 to 55.95 mg O2 individual-1 h-1. Individual energetic requirements were 2.8 to 33.7 kJ d-1. The assimilated energy was estimated, taking into consideration: (1) the energetic value of the most important alga in the diet (Lessonia trabeculata); (2) size-specific differences in assimilation rates for fish fed on this alga; (3) size-specific differences in throughput time and in the amount of food in a full gut. Comparison of the energy required and the assimilated energy revealed that fishes of 〈 22 to 29 cm total length had a negative energetic balance when consuming algae exclusively. This may explain the reliance of smallA. punctatus on more easily-digested invertebrates. The largest individuals can meet their energetic demands by consuming algae alone, apparently because of their higher assimilation capability. InA. punctatus, changing energetic requirements and capacities for algal assimilation may be responsible for the observed ontogenetic change in diet.
