Notes: Abstract The crystallographic features of various histological sites found in enamel carious lesions were studied by means of X-ray microbeam diffraction. The most interesting finding was that the crystallinity of apatite crystals in the intact surface layer covering the demineralized lesions was higher than that of the crystals in the subsurface lesions or unaffected areas. Acid-dissolution experiments using synthetic hydroxyapatite pellets showed that a well mineralized layer was produced on the pellet surface under the condition that no Ca and PO4 ions were added to the initial acidic solution. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that half-line breadth values of 004, 222, and 310 reflections of apatite pellets decreased, and their integrated peak intensities increased with dissolution time. These findings are in agreement with the results obtained in the study of enamel carious lesions, leading to the conclusion that the intact surface layer is formed by deposition of the mineral ions from dissolving subsurface lesions, and that this process is accompanied by the improvement in crystallinity of apatite crystals, possibly due to growth of the crystals.

Notes: A novel and simple nonhydrothermal method was developed for synthesizing hydroxyapatite whiskers under mild conditions. Hydroxyapatite whiskers were synthesized by the hydrolysis of alpha-tricalcium phosphate at 80°C and atmospheric pressure. The effect of aliphatic alcohols on the transformation of alpha-tricalcium phosphate to hydroxyapatite in water-alcohol systems was examined. When the hydroxyapatite was characterized by XRD and TEM observation, its morphology and size were found to vary with the specific alcohol used during hydrolysis. The effect of reaction time on hydrolysis of alpha-tricalcium phosphate to hydroxyapatite also was studied.

Notes: Conclusions The present ESR study on the13C enriched carbonate apatites suggested that the doublet signal of 146 gauss disposed on either side of the asymmetric signal is a hyperfine splitting due to13C. The doublet signal of 170 gauss which has been observed in enamel samples by several workers is tentatively attributed to another hyperfine splitting due to13C.

Notes: Abstract A new hemodialyzing system is proposed in which urea and other toxins are removed from the recirculating dialysate by adsorption on activated carbon in two alternately used adsorber-desorber columns. Desorption of urea and other molecules was performed by passing water and then fresh dialysate through the adsorbent bed. Durations of the periods for adsorption and desorption could be varied using a timer and solenoid valves. In vitro experiments showed sufficient decrease in the concentrations of ureaet al. in the body fluid, while their concentrations in the recycling dialysate stayed very low. The adsorbent can be used repeatedly after regeneration. The new system is considerably more economical than the conventional hemodialyzing system with continuous dilution of dialysate in the cost of construction and the amount of dialysate required.

Notes: Abstract Rates of ultrafiltration of bovine blood of various hematocrits were measured in ultrafilters of hollow-fiber type. The results were analyzed by the gel-polarization model. The mass transfer coefficientk for the back-diffusion of protein molecules away from the gel layer, which controls the ultrafiltrate flux, increase with the cube root of the shear rate at the membrane surface. At a given shear rate, it increases and then decreases with increasing hematocrit. A working equation for predictingk is proposed.

Notes: To study the effect of fluoride on the physicochemical properties of carbonate-containing apatites, two series of fluoridated CO3 apatites with various fluoride contents were synthesized at 80°C and pH 7.4. The a-axis dimensions of these apatites decreased with the increase of both fluoride and carbonate contents. The crystallinity of the apatites showed similar patterns of variation with the degree of fluoridation irrespective of carbonate content. These patterns appear analogous to the complex pattern of the fluoridated hydroxyapatites previously reported. In contrast to this unexpected crystallinity phenomena, the apparent solubility of fluoridated CO3 apatites in acetate buffer solutions at pH 4.0 and 6.0 and 37°C decreased monotonically with increasing degree of fluoridation and approached that of fluoridated hydroxyapatites at high fluoride content. Dissolution rate of fluoridated CO3 apatite pellets at pH 4.0 also showed a simple decrease with increasing degree of fluoridation and was extremely sensitive to acid at low fluoride content.

Notes: A Ni-45 wt % Ti (Ni-50 at % Ti) alloy was cast into molds of magnesia and silica investments by use of a dental argon-arc pressure casting machine with a copper crucible. The castings exhibited shape memory properties. The shape recovery process was sharper in the specimens cast in magnesia investment molds than in those cast in silica (phosphate-bonded) investment molds. The latter casting had a hard region of the periphery, suggesting that shape recovery process may be affected by reaction of molten metal with silica. Furthermore, the alloy possessed the adequate mechanical properties for consideration as crown-and-bridge prostheses.

Notes: From the experimental data on the rates of urea transfer from blood to dialysate in a test hemodialyzer, a practical equation for the effect of the hematocrit on the blood-phase urea transfer coefficient is proposed. With this equation, the overall mass transfer coefficient that takes into account the properties of the blood can be estimated for the commercially available disposable flat membrane-type and hollow fiber-type hemodialyzers from the data for a relatively simple dialysate-dialysate system.

Notes: Iron-containing fluoridated hydroxyapatites with various fluoride contents were synthesized at 80°C and pH 7.4 using FeCl2 · nH2O as a source of iron. The Fe2+ uptake of fluoridated apatites was independent of fluoride concentration in the solution. a-Axis dimensions of Fe-containing apatites decreased with the degree of fluoridation in addition to the decrease related to the substitution of Fe2+ ions. All Fe-containing fluoridated apatites were less well crystallized than Fe-free fluoridated apatites previously reported, although with increasing degree of fluoridation, the crystallinity behavior of the former apatites appeared analogous to that of the latter apatites. In contrast to this inhibited crystallinity behavior, the apparent solubility of Fe-containing fluoridated apatites decreased more than that of Fe-free fluoridated apatites at low fluoride content.
