Notes: Abstract An algorithm for the detection and measurement of the glomerular basement membrane in kidney electron micrographs by image analysis techniques is described. Starting from a user-specified point, local features within a small window are computed to give a feature score. Feature scores for adjacent neighbourhoods are also determined, and windows that satisfy similarity criteria are linked to produce the centerline of the membrane. A region-growing process completes the segmentation procedure. The adaptive and local nature of the algorithm ensures successful segmentation despite the complex and variable characteristics of the micrograph image.

Notes: Summary Another bivariate generalisation (Type V) of the non-central negative binomial distribution is considered. This generalisation is constructed (i) as a latent structure model; (ii) as an extension of an accident proneness model investigated by Edwards/Gurland (1961); and (iii) as a reversible stochastic counter model. The third construction gives, as a result, an apparently new formulation of the Edwards/Gurland model. The probabilities, moments, recurrence formulas and some properties are given. An application to the data used by Holgate (1966) is considered.

Notes: Summary Four bivariate generalisations (Type I–IV) of the non-central negative binomial distribution (Ong/Lee) are considered. The Type I generalisation is constructed using the “latent structure model” scheme (Goodman) while the Type II generalisation arises from a variation of this scheme. The Type III generalisation is formed by using the method of random elements in common (Mardia). The Type IV is an extension of the Type I generalisation. Properties of these bivariate distributions including joint central and factorial moments are discussed; several recurrence formulae of the probabilities are given. An application to the childhood accident data of Mellinger et al. is considered with the precision of the Type I maximum likelihood estimates computed.

Notes: Summary α1-Antitrypsin and α1-inhibitor-3 were localized for the first time inside skeletal muscle cells. Their content, especially that of α1-inhibitor-3, was greatly reduced following streptozotocin-induced diabetes. α1-Antitrypsin and α1-inhibitor-3 were also observed in the vascular components and interstitial space surrounding both control and diabetic soleus muscles as revealed by immunofluorescence. In diabetic muscles, the non-myofibre locale of α1-inhibitor-3 was reduced, and to a lesser extent, α1-antitrypsin. Both myofibre and extracellular patterns were reversed to control levels by insulin replacement.

Notes: Summary This communication documents for the first time the presence of an endogeneous macromolecule of biological importance, a lipoprotein, inside normal rat skeletal muscle cells but absent in those from rats made diabetic by streptozotocin treatment. Apoprotein B was localized in the vascular components and interstitial spaces surrounding both control and diabetic extensor digitorum muscles as revealed by immunofluorescence. However, in muscles from control but not diabetic rats, apoprotein B was also observed inside the myofibres, especially in regions adjacent to capillaries. The staining pattern was unaltered by the addition of albumin to the antisera and was absent in all situations in which absorbed antisera were tested.

Notes: meso and dl Dimers (ArCHOR)2 where R is Me, Et, iPr, tBu, cyclohexyl and 1-adamantyl may readily be differentiated by their NMR spectra; the benzylic protons of the meso isomer always absorb at a slightly higher field than those of the dl isomer in each of the solvents used. Differences in chemical shift are discussed in terms of preferences in conformer distribution. The formation of equal amounts of both dimers from the corresponding radical ArCHOR shows that steric and polar factors are not important in influencing the dimerization. Magnetic non-equivalence due to the presence of asymmetric centres was found in some of the compounds discussed above.
