Notes: Abstract. In the Rhine-Delta, accumulation of microcontaminants in floodplain foodwebs has received little attention in comparison with aquatic communities. Here, soil and cattle milk samples were taken from three floodplains and analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs). Based on 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin equivalents, total PCDD and PCDF residues in milk did not exceed the quality standard of 0.006 μg/kg fat weight. This was still the case if non- and mono-ortho PCBs were added to the total. Yet, the floodplains investigated were only moderately polluted according to previous studies and one cannot exclude higher levels in milk from other floodplains. Bioconcentration ratios of milk fat vs soil organic matter were about 0.01 to 0.1 for persistent PCBs. These values are in accordance with a few literature data found for other persistent compounds. Yet, ratios are lower than expected from equilibrium partitioning. Ratios for PCDDs and PCDFs were even lower, possibly due to biotransformation.

Notes: Summary In 22 endocrinologically active hypophyseal adenomas the relationship between the biological behaviour and the cytological picture was investigated. There was a positive correlation between the atypia of the cells in the cytograms and hormone secretion of the tumour cells in vitro and the clinical aggressiveness. Cytological examination gave a better insight into the biological properties of these tumours than histological methods.

Notes: Summary Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) was measured in serum samples of 35 patients with small cell lung cancer and 10 control patients. The samples were collected during 10 days after the first course of chemotherapy, in order to investigate whether changes of NSE had a predictive value for tumour response. Three patterns of change of NSE were observed. Pattern 1 showed an increase of serum NSE with a maximum value more than 1.5 times the pretreatment level (n=17); pattern 2 involved no increase at all or less than 1.5 times the pretreatment level (n=14); pattern 3 showed a continuous decrease (n=5). No relationship between the three patterns of change and the tumour response was observed. Only an NSE level 〈10 ng/ml at the time of start of the second course predicted a major response.

Notes: Summary Serum samples were collected from 115 small-cell lung cancer patients before each course of chemotherapy and during follow-up. Levels of neuronspecific enolase (NSE) were measured and compared to the clinical assessments of the course of the disease, which were done by the responsible physician without knowledge of NSE-values. The predictive accuracy of an increase or decrease of NSE for a major response (CR+PR), SD or PD was 98%. Importantly no falsepositive rises of NSE were observed. On the basis of this large number of data it seems justified to conclude that in common clinical practice the treatment of small-cell lung cancer patients can be monitored by serial measurements of NSE alone.

Notes: Summary Serum acid phosphatase activity is known to be elevated in a number of patients with metastatic prostatic carcinoma. Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) can be specifically measured by immunological methods. In this study we evaluated an enzyme-immunoassay of the sandwich type utilizing monoclonal antibodies. Immunoassayable PAP decreased after storage at room temperature for 72 h and also after repeated freezing and thawing, although not evident in all samples. PAP levels were measured in 88 newly diagnosed prostatic carcinoma patients, in 124 patients with histologically proven benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and in 124 elderly hospitalized male patients without urological complaints. The upper limit of normal, as determined in the control group, was 2.3 μg/l. Of the BPH patients, 17% had elevated PAP levels (range 2.4–27 μg/l). We found a positive correlation between prostate volume (grams of tissue removed during TUR) and preoperative PAP values (r=0.26, N=121, P〈0.01). Elevated PAP levels were found in 3% of BPH patients with a prostate volume of less than 20 g (N=63), in contrast with 55% of patients with a prostate volume above 50 g (N=18). The sensitivity of this PAP assay for detecting the clinical stages of prostatic carcinoma was 13% for category To (N=15), 30% for category T1–2 (N=20), 71% for category T3–4 (N=24), and 83% for category M1 or N1–4 (N=29). The upper limit of normal (2.3 μg/l) as calculated from a large group of controls with a mean age of 62 years is rather similar to the value found in younger controls. In BPH patients, however, elevated PAP levels may be found which are seen more frequently in patients with a large prostate. Thus, for the calculation of the normal range, it is not recommended to include the results from BPH patients. The sensitivity of this enzyme-immunoassay with monoclonal antibodies in detecting prostatic cancer, at a specificity of 98%, is comparable to other immunoassays for PAP.

Notes: Summary Changes in the number of autofluorescent and serotonin-containing pinealocytes have been studied after gonadotropic hormone administration using fluorescence histochemistry. Moreover, the 5-HT levels in the pineal gland were determined biochemically under the same experimental conditions. The results suggest that pineal 5-HT levels are not influenced by increased gonadotropin levels, while the amount of autofluorescent pinealocytes increases after gonadotropin injections. It has been postulated that differences in androgenic hormone levels could not cause the changes in the number of autofluorescent pinealocytes. The reaction of the pineal gland to increased gonadotropin levels seemed important in view of the regulatory function of the epiphysis on the hypothalamo-hypophyseo-gonadal axis.
