    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé. Nous présentons une série de quinze révisions en un temps pour arthroplasties de la hanche infectées par germes Gram négatifs. Le suivi moyen a été de huit ans. Dans quatorze cas, nous n’avons pas constaté de récidive septique. Dans le cas ayant présenté une récidive d’infection, du ciment sans antibiotique avait été utilisé lors de la révision. Une infection à germes Gram négatif ne doit pas être considérée comme une contre-indication à une révision d’arthroplastie de hanche en un temps, pour autant que la prothèse soit réimplantée avec du ciment chargé en antibiotique.
    Notes: Summary. We describe the use of one stage revision arthroplasty of the hip for deep gram negative infections. We have followed up 15 patients for an average of 8 years following operation. Two procedures failed, one at two years due to aseptic loosening and another because of persistent infection. We attribute the low reinfection rate (1/15) to meticulous surgical technique, preoperative parenteral antibiotics and antibiotic loaded cement. Both failures occurred in the two operations performed without antibiotic loaded cement. We do not recommend the use of plain cement for exchange hip arthroplasty in the presence of gram negative infection.

    Notes: Abstract: Administration of lithium chloride to rats injected intracerebrally with [3H]inositol led to time- and dose-dependent increases in levels of labeled inositol monophosphates in brain. Quantitative analysis of the inositol phosphates by ion chromatography revealed 37- and 20-fold increases in the mass of myo-inositol 1-phosphate and 4-phosphate, respectively, at 4 h intraperitoneal after injections of 6 mEq/kg of lithium chloride. Albeit to a much lesser extent, lithium administration also resulted in an increase in the level of myo-inositol 1,4-bisphosphate in brain. The lithium-induced increase in content of labeled inositol monophosphates was marked by a concomitant decrease in content of labeled inositol, and after injections of high doses of lithium, e.g., 10 mEq/kg, this was followed by a general decrease in labeling of the inositol phospholipids. In general, animals injected with [3H]inositol but not lithium did not reveal obvious differences in labeling of inositol monophosphates on stimulation by mecamylamine or pilocarpine. However, when animals were injected with [3H]inositol and then lithium, there were large increases in the levels of labeled inositol monophosphates on administration of these compounds. Administration of atropine to the lithium-treated mice led to a partial reduction in the amount of labeled inositol monophosphates accumulated due to the administration of lithium alone. Furthermore, atropine was able to block the pilocarpine-induced increase in level of labeled inositol monophosphates. These results demonstrate the suitable use of the radiotracer technique together with lithium administration for assessing the effects of drugs and receptor agonists on the signaling system involving polyphosphoinositide turnover in brain.

    Notes: Enkephalin degradation in brain has been shown to be catalyzed, in part, by a membrane-bound puromycinsensitive aminopeptidase. A cytosolic puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase with similar properties also has been described. The relationship between the soluble and membrane forms of the rat brain enzyme is investigated here. Both of these aminopeptidase forms were purified from rat brain and an antiserum was generated to the soluble enzyme. Each of the aminopeptidases is composed of a single polypeptide of molecular mass 100 kilodaltons as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and sizeexclusion chromatography. The antisoluble aminopeptidase antiserum reacts with both enzyme forms on immunoblots and inhibits both with nearly identical inhibition curves. The isoelectric points (pI = 5.0) of both forms were shown to be identical. N-terminal sequencing yielded a common sequence (P-E-K-R-P-F-E-R-L-P-T-E-V-S-P-I-N-Y) for both enzyme forms, and peptide mapping yielded 26 peptides that also appeared identical between the two enzyme forms. Studies on the nature of the association of the membrane enzyme form with the cell membrane suggest that this enzyme form does not represent the soluble form trapped during the enzyme preparation. It is suggested that the membrane form of the puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase is identical to the soluble enzyme and that it associates with the membrane by interactions with other integral membrane proteins.

    Notes: We investigated dimethyl-s-tetrazine (-h6 and -d6) in a n-heptane (-h16 and -d16) lattice with hole burning techniques. Stark experiments definitely show that the two methyl groups in dimethyl-s-tetrazine (DMST) are inequivalent. Hence, the respective rotational tunneling dynamics can be different. This is clearly seen in the behavior of DMST-d6 in both lattices n-heptane-h16 and -d16: Hole burning produces three pairs of sideholes symmetrically shifted from the laser frequency. The tunneling dynamics of the central hole as well as of the sideholes is governed by two relaxation times which differ by about one order of magnitude. Due to the narrow temperature range accessible, an unambiguous assignment of the microscopic tunneling relaxation process is not possible. On the other hand, DMST-h6 relaxes via a Raman process above 3 K and via a direct process below. In the Raman-active regime the tunneling rates for both host lattices fall on top of each other in agreement with theory. There are, however, features in the tunneling dynamics which are not yet understood. For instance, in the temperature regime where the direct process prevails, host deuteration speeds up the tunneling relaxation by an order of magnitude. In addition, the sidehole pattern of DMST-h6 is quite different from DMST-d6: Only one pair is observed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Preservative efficacy testing without counting colonies was performed by determining growth in dilutions of inoculated product following enrichment in Letheen broth with 0.001% triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) in 96-well microtitre plates. Bacterial growth was indicated by the development of a red/pink colour in the enrichment broth. The method was used to determine log reductions of bacteria at specified times after inoculation, and D-values were calculated using the reciprocal of the highest dilution showing growth (pink colour) as the log CFU/ml bacteria at each time point. The method using TTC was validated by demonstrating that D-values for Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Burkholderia cepacia, and Escherichia coli in 44 aqueous cosmetic and OTC-drug products were virtually identical to those obtained when using Alamar Blue in the miniaturized system (1). Plotting D-values obtained using TTC as a function of D-values obtained using Alamar Blue gave a line with a slope of 0.98, which shows excellent agreement of results obtained by the two methods. This miniaturized assay system has been used for more than 3\,years for preservative efficacy testing of several hundred cosmetic and OTC-drug product samples in our laboratory. It is recommended for laboratories that conduct large numbers of preservative efficacy tests.

    Notes: The FMR absorption of different particulate recording tapes was investigated at microwave frequencies in the X band and Q band using temperatures from 70 to 400 K. The FMR spectra as a function of the external magnetic field were recorded for four different orientations of the static and high frequency magnetic fields with respect to the tape. Particular interest of the experimental and theoretical study was devoted to the interaction fields between the particles, texture effects within the tape sample and the effective anisotropy fields. Tape samples with different particle materials, varying packing densities and orientation ratios were prepared. The shape and line position of the FMR spectra obtained are strongly dependent on the pigment material and the tape parameters mentioned above. The experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations, based on a phenomenological model and a computer simulation. This comparison gives information on the orientational distribution of the particles, which is the most important source for inhomogeneous line broadening, the mean interaction, and anisotropy fields which govern the line position, the effective magnetization of the tape, and the relaxation time. The influence of the crystalline anisotropy can be investigated via temperature dependent measurements. The results are proved by additional transverse susceptibility measurements.
