    Notes: Summary Strain T1 is a denitrifying bacterium that is capable of toluene degradation under anaerobic conditions. During anaerobic growth on toluene, the specific growth rate of strain T1 was 0.14 h−1. Nitrite accumulated in the medium stoichiometrically with the depletion of nitrate. When nitrate was nearly depleted from the medium nitrite reduction and dinitrogen formation began. A non-kinetic model was formulated that was based on a hypothesis of non-simultaneous nitrate and nitrite reduction, independent of the concentrations of nitrate and nitrite. The model was verified experimentally over a wide range of conditions that included nitrate and nitrite limitation, toluene limitation, and various ratios of nitrate to nitrite. The model and its experimental verification demonstrated that strain T1 reduces nitrate and nitrite non-simultaneously, even if nitrite is initially present in the medium in addition to nitrate.

    Notes: Abstract A bacteriophage ofAcetobacter suboxydans was isolated and found to correspond to type A phage according to Bradley's classification. The phage contains double stranded DNA. The length of the latency period and burst size could not be precisely determined because of apparent non-synchronous release of phage from single infective cycles. The host range was determined using 24 strains ofAcetobacter andGluconobacter species. Evidence for a probable occurence of host determined restriction and modification was obtained withAcetobacter suboxydans strain ATCC 621. The phage is designated A-1 and it is the first one to be reported forAcetobacter.

    Notes: Abstract The chemotactic properties of spores of Actinoplanes brasiliensis were examined. The spores are attracted to chloride and bromide solutions but not to a number of organic compounds that are capable of supporting growth in chemically defined media. Chloride attraction has been tested in several other species of the genus and in a number of Actinoplanes strains isolated from soils. Some are attracted to chloride, but most strains are indifferent to the halide. In dense suspensions, the spores of A. brasiliensis show an apparent microaerophilic behavior. The ecological implications of the chemotactic properties of the A. brasiliensis spores are discussed.

A selection of studies on the biochemical and physiological properties of members of the genus is critically examined in relation to the current taxonomic scheme as a frame of reference.

    Notes: Abstract Modern approaches based on the use of molecular techniques presumed to circumvent the need for culturing prokaryotes, fail to provide sufficient and reliable information for estimation of prokaryote diversity. Many properties that make these organisms important members of the living world are amenable to observation only through the study of living cultures. Since current culture techniques do not always satisfy the need of providing a balanced picture of the microflora composition, future developments in the study of bacterial diversity should include improvements in the culture methods to approach as closely as possible the conditions of natural habitats. Molecular methods of microflora analysis have an important role as guides for the isolation and characterization of new prokaryotic taxa. Although the species concept is central to biodiversity studies, it is is extremely difficult to propose a definition applicable without constraints to all groups of living organisms. However, in prokaryote systematics much improvement has been achieved by comprehensive descriptions that include not only molecular data, but also the relevant aspects of the biology of the organisms under study (polyphasic approach).
