    Notes: Electrical contacts to porous silicon were formed by depositing various metals such as aluminum, gold, and titanium onto its surface. Low temperature current–voltage measurements were performed, which allowed us to identify the contact as a metal–insulator–semiconductor (MIS) structure. The parameters which characterize the MIS structure: the mean barrier height presented by the insulating film (χ), the barrier height presented to the electrons in the metal by the semiconductor itself (VB0), the ideality coefficient (n) and the series resistance (Rs), were determined for each type of contact studied. All of these contacts show fairly high values of the ideality coefficient, which are explained by the presence of a large concentration of interface states. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Electrical contacts to porous silicon (PS) were formed by depositing aluminum onto its surface. The corresponding Al/PS/Si structures show a rectifying behavior, even after prolonged times in contact to the atmosphere. The series resistance and the ideality factor as a function of time of storage in ambient air have been determined by employing a variation of the Norde method. We have also studied the influence of the electrolytic formation parameters in the process of aging of the Al/PS/Si structures. The results show that longer anodization times and higher formation current densities of the PS layer lead to a faster diminution of the current flowing through the Al/PS/Si structure as a result of its exposition to the atmosphere. However, when the surface of the PS layer is chemically etched, the diminution of the current is significantly slower than in the case of untreated samples. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and digital image processing were used to investigate in detail the structure of porous silicon (PS). It was found that PS is composed of rounded Si nanocrystals with characteristic sizes between 21 and 80 Å, embedded into an amorphous matrix and with no preferential orientation. We have determined that the size distribution of the nanocrystals can be fitted to a Gaussian distribution centered at 45.89 Å. Furthermore, the structure of the individual Si grains was studied, which allowed us to determine that the interplanar distance varies from 3.17 to 3.41 Å, with Gaussian distribution centered at 3.24 Å. Finally, the lattice parameter of the individual Si grains that compose PS was also measured, showing a Gaussian distribution centered at 5.61 Å. The origin of the structure of PS is also discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background C-fibres have received considerable attention in the context of airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), in fact several lines of evidence suggest that tachykinins might be involved in the pathogenesis of AHR.Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the role of capsaicin-sensitive sensory C-fibres and tachykinins in rabbits sensitized to the major allergen of Parietaria judaica pollen (Par j1).Methods Airway responsiveness was determined by exposing sensitized rabbits to cumulative concentrations of aerosolized histamine before and after an allergic challenge and after a pre-treatment with either vehicle or capsaicin or tachykinin receptor antagonists. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed following histamine challenge and total and differential cell counts were performed.Results In sensitized rabbits, an AHR to inhaled histamine was observed 24 h after a Par j1 challenge. Capsaicin pre-treatment inhibited the AHR achieved 24 h following antigen exposure (P 〈 0.01). Pre-treatment with the tachykinin NK2 receptor antagonist, SR 48968, significantly reduced the antigen-induced AHR (P 〈 0.05), while pre-treatment with tachykinin NK1 (SR 140333) and NK3 (SR 142801) receptor antagonists did not significantly modify it. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid obtained from vehicle and capsaicin-treated rabbits challenged with Par j1 exhibited no significant differences in total and differential cell counts.Conclusions Parietaria judaica-induced AHR in immunized rabbits was shown to be inhibited by pre-treatment with capsaicin, an effect that is not related to an action on the associated pulmonary infiltration of eosinophils. The involvement of NK2 receptor stimulation in this phenomenon also suggests that NK2 receptor antagonists may be useful for investigating mechanisms of bronchopulmonary alterations in asthmatic patients.

    Notes: Allergies are dramatically increasing in prevalence, and the management of these diseases is a heavy burden on the health-care systems of developed countries. In recent years, many efforts have been made to improve the therapy of allergies and to develop new approaches for immunotherapy. Here we briefly review the use of peptides to modulate T-cell responses to allergens. We focus mainly on the possibility of using altered peptide ligands (APLs), i.e., peptides tailored on immunodominant T epitopes and bearing a single amino-acid substitution, as a tool to modulate immune responses to allergens. These peptides may be recognized by the specific T cells triggered by the agonist peptides, but they are unable to elicit T-cell responses; thus, they could be ideal candidates to modulate immune responses to allergens. The availability of these peptides could allow new approaches for immunotherapies.

    Notes: Asthma is a complex inflammatory disease of the lung characterized by variable airflow obstruction, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and airway inflammation. Inflammation in asthma consists of airway infiltration by mast cells, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. There is accumulating evidence that CD4+ lymphocytes with a Th2-cytokine pattern play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of asthma. These cells orchestrate the recruitment and activation of the primary effector cells of the allergic response (mast cells and eosinophils), through the release of cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13. Allergic inflammation is also implicated in airway epithelium changes, although the mechanisms by which inflammatory cells and, in particular, T cells interact with the epithelium are not completely clarified. This paper explores the role of T cells in the allergic inflammation of asthma.

    Notes: A method for the extraction by C18 columns and HPLC analysis of bitter components of virgin olive oils was developed. Factorial design showed the suitability of using two columns and three HPLC analyses per sample. An equation obtained by multiple regression analysis, related bitterness with the area of peaks, which explained 92% or variance.

    Notes: Abstract  The response of a series of soil microbial, chemical, and enzymatic chacacteristics to two different tillage systems (conventional and no-tillage) and two crop rotations (continuous corn and soybean–corn) was evaluated in a long-term field experiment in the Rolling Pampas Region, Marcos Juárez, Córdoba, Argentina. The parameters studied included: oxidizable, soluble and respiration C, total and hydrolyzable N, microbial activity, ammonifiers, nitrifiers, cellulolytic and total microflora, protease and urease activities. After 15 years, oxidizable C, total N and hydrolyzable N showed no differences regarding no-tillage systems. However, differences were found regarding control soil. While soluble C did not exhibit any significant differences, respiration C and microbial activity were indicators sensitive to different treatments. Enzymatic activities, protease in particular, did reflect changes due to management. Fluctuation in microbial population counts were more related to plant residues than to tillage systems.
