Notes: Abstract Three structural chromosome changes in the plant Hypochoeris radicata 2n = 8 have been tested for their effects on chiasma formation: (1) centric fission of chromosome 1, (2) a whole arm exchange between chromosomes 1 and 3, and (3) an interchange between the long arm of chromosome 1 and the short arm of 2 which gives an effectively three-armed pachytene multiple. Mean chiasma frequencies were compared between full-sibs in families segregating for the rearrangements. In each family the chiasma frequency was higher in heterozygotes than basic homozygotes. The size of the chiasma increase is dependant on the number of additional potentially-paired segments in the complement at pachytene. Fission heterozygotes and 1/2 interchange heterozygotes, with one extra pairing region, both form about 0.45 more chiasmata per PMC than full-sib basic homozygotes. The 1/3 exchange, with two additional pairing regions, increases chiasma frequency by twice this, about 0.85 per PMC. Individuals homozygous for the centric fission maintain the raised chiasma level. The chiasma increase appears limited to the chromosome(s) affected by structural change with no detectable interchromosomal effect.

Notes: Summary The frequency and distribution of chiasmata was investigated in two fertile carriers of reciprocal translocations, one with a 46,XY,t(9;10)(p22;q24) karyotype and one with a 46,X,-Y,+der(Y),t(Y;10)(q12;q24) karyotype. In both cases the chromosomes involved in the translocation showed an increase in chiasma frequency in comparison to karyotypically normal controls and in both cases this increase was localised, affecting only one interstitial segment of each translocation quadrivalent. In the t(9;10) case chiasmata appeared in substantial numbers in a novel location, the proximal two thirds of 9p, while in the t(Y;10) case chiasmata appeared in a conventional location, the medial region of 10q, but at an increased frequency. Furthermore there was evidence for inter-chromosomal effects in the t(9;10) case.

Notes: The ground-state properties of bulk atomic hydrogen are calculated for the low-density gas, assuming that the atoms interact via the 3Σ u + pair potential. The Monte Carlo technique is applied to a system consisting of 32 hydrogen atoms in a box, with periodic boundary conditions. These results are compared with those derived from the hard-sphere Bose-Einstein gas model.

Notes: Substitution of flavianic acid (50 mM) or of a stoichiometric mixture of naphthol yellow S and hydrochloric acid, in place of picric acid in Van Gieson type mixtures gives deeper yellow colors to cytoplasm, muscle and erythrocytes. Higher concentrations of acid fuchsin can be used with consequent greater density of collagen fiber staining and improved contrast. The familiar weakening of hematoxylin nuclear stains by exposure to Van Gieson mixtures can be largely avoided by inclusion of 0.1 M ferric chloride in the Van Gieson mixture. Alum hematoxylin can then be used in place of the unstable iron hematoxylin solutions, and the iron hematoxylin effect is attained by the iron postmordanting in the Van Gieson bath. A ten minute prestain in an alum hematoxylin containing 0.5% hematoxylin is adequate but density can be enhanced by longer staining or by staining at higher temperature; 5-10 min at 60°C is suggested. The iron containing flavianic or picric acid Van Gieson staining baths should be restricted to three minutes; longer exposures gradually weaken nuclear staining.Substitution of 0.1 M copper sulfate for the iron in the Van Gieson bath also yields dark gray to black nuclei. Aluminum chloride (0.1 M) has an effect similar to the control hydrochloric acid, while the chromium ion seems quite inferior, even to the control HCl mixture.A ferrous sulfate hematoxylin ripened overnight with a small amount of ferric chloride gives excellent progressive nuclear staining, adequate in 2-5 minutes, and not excessive in 30 minutes. The solution gradually deteriorates in 6-8 weeks.
