Notes: The differential genotypes R1, R10 and R11, as originally defined by Black, were crossed with R-gene-free cultivars and the progenies divided into two subpopulations comprising those which had inherited the R-gene and those which had not. The underlying level of field resistance of the two groups was compared in a field trial in which they were inoculated with an isolate that could overcome the relevant R-genes. The R-gene-bearing group was significantly (P 〈 0·001) more resistant than the R-gene-free group, with mean scores over four dates in 2000 of 4·86 and 4·09, respectively, on a 1–9 scale of increasing resistance, and of 4·10 and 2·35 on one date in 2001. However, the magnitude of the effect depended on the R-gene and the year of the trial. Data from a progeny of cv. Stirling (with an R-gene and a high level of field resistance) were examined and the same effect of an R-gene found. Fewer of the R-gene-bearing group of clones were highly susceptible, and more were resistant. The most resistant clones always bore the R-gene. It is concluded that increased resistance is conferred by the defeated R-gene or linked genes for field resistance.

Notes: Abstract The nature of atmospheric aerosols at Gurushikar, Mt. Abu, Rajasthan where a gamma ray telescope is to be installed, was investigated. Air particulate samples collected on filters were used to estimate the total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) and its elemental composition. The TSPM varied from 31 to 103 μg/m3 during January to March 1994. The heighest loads were observed during the months of May and June (80–100 μg/m3) and lowest during October (20–60 μg/m3). The dust was also examined for size, shape and nature of the mineral matter. The particle sizes varied from 100 μm to 5 μm. The course particles (〉50 μm) are irregular shaped quartz grains. Some of the medium size (=50 μm) particles were spherical and were highly conducting. These particles were rich in iron content. Correlation coefficients among various elements in the dust showed that it is made up of mainly two components-wind blown ground dust and particulate arising out of wood and coal burning.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxylapatite, prepared by the reaction of an aqueous suspension of Ca(OH)2 with H3PO4 at pH〉7 and sintered at 700°C was subjected to various pressures in a Bridgman anvil apparatus, and the retrieved material was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The studies showed that the crystalline hydroxylapatite transforms irreversibly to an amorphous phase 2 GPa. The transformation occurs through an intermediate phase and is completed at around 10 GPa pressure.

Notes: Summary The infective stage of the oesophageal tumour worm of dog: Spirocerca lupi (Rudolphi, 1809, Spirurinae: Spiruridae) was encountered during examination of four of the fourteen species of the dung-beetles. The larval form has been described and its experimental infection studied in two rabbits in which there was not only reencystment in the gastric wall but some of the juveniles, entering the aorta, had caused the development of typical lesion of aortic “spirocercosis”. The aortic specimens included pre-adults and an adult female. This finding of the fourth and the fifth stage juveniles including a mature female is of particular interest as it has confirmed the earlier observations, from this Department, on the recovery of the juveniles of S. lupi from the bulbous aorta of the equine, the caprine and bubaline hosts. These specimens were, however, much smaller in size than those found in the normal definitive host and those known from the abnormal hosts reported. The histopathology of the various lesions has also been described.

Notes: Summary The echinochasmid metacercaria, recovered from the gills of Ophiocephalus punctatus, has been described and its specific determination confirmed from experimental infections administered to 6 pigeons and 2 chicks. Brief accounts have been given of the developmental stages, the juveniles and the mature flukes recovered. The prepatent period, in this study, has been found to be less in chicks than in pigeons.

Notes: Summary Viviparus bengalensis race mandiensis evidently is the second intermediate host of Echinoparyphium flexum. This important echinostome species, in spite of the wide prevalence of its metacercariae in this area, does not seem to have been reported from any of the birds — domestic and wild. The present finding indicates that a search for the adults of this species might reveal its incidence. Relevant previous work in connection with the forms herein dealt with including their adults has been referred to.
