Notes: In this study, a hybrid health monitoring technique that combines wireless sensing andembedded monitoring algorithms is proposed to realize the diagnosis of damage in PSC girder bridges.Firstly, a hybrid damage monitoring system that can alarm damage occurrence and classifydamage-types is designed for PSC girder bridges. Secondly, smart sensor nodes that have wireless,stand-alone, sensing and monitoring capacities of acceleration and impedance are developed for hybridhealth monitoring of the structures. Finally, the performance of the smart sensor nodes is evaluatedusing a laboratory-scale PSC girder bridge model for which acceleration and impedance signals weremeasured for prestress-loss and stiffness-loss cases

Notes: Abstract The authors report 4 cases of hepatic artery aneurysm confirmed by computed tomography, sonography, angiography, and/or surgery. Three aneurysms involved the right hepatic artery and 1 involved the common hepatic artery. Two cases were treated with surgery, and the other 2 cases with transcatheter embolization. The clinical and radiological features of this entity are described together with a review of the pertinent literature.

Notes: Abstract In eight patients with tuberculous strictures of the urinary tract, antegrade balloon dilation and ureteral stenting was attempted. In six patients, antegrade balloon dilation was successfully performed; however, the procedure was aborted in the remaining two patients due to the failure in passing a guidewire through the stenotic lesions. In six patients in whom balloon dilation and ureteral stenting were performed, a total of nine stenotic lesions were dilated. Those were four ureteric lesions, two lesions of ureteropelvic junctions, two lesions of ureterovesical junctions, and a lesion of calyceal infundibulum. In all six patients in whom balloon dilation and ureteral stenting was successfully accomplished, intravenous urograms obtained 9–31 months after the procedure showed improvements both in contrast media excretion and in prestenotic dilatation. Antegrade balloon dilation of the urinary tract combined with ureteral stenting was an effective technique for the management of stenoses secondary to tuberculosis of the urinary tract.

Notes: Abstract We encountered 2 cases of guidewire-induced perforation of the gastroduodenal artery after using a hydrophil-coated guidewire. The guidewire penetrated a small side branch of the normal gastroduodenal artery in 1 patient and the weakened gastroduodenal artery due to pancreatic pseudocyst in the other patient. Both complications resulted in serious hemorrhage and were successfully managed by transcatheter embolization using steel coils. In an era of widespread use of hydrophil-coated guidewires for superselective catheterization, it is important to appreciate the possibility of this potentially serious complication.

Notes: Abstract Purpose The effectiveness of renal transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) with a mixture of ethanol and iodized oil (Lipiodol) was analyzed retrospectively in 27 patients with unresectable renal cell carcinoma. Methods Symptomatic or permanent palliation by TAE was performed with the intent to achieve total or partial ablation of the kidney with 10–28 ml of embolic material in a 3 ∶ 1 mixture of ethanol and iodized oil. Clinical, angiographic, and computed tomographic (CT) follow-up were analyzed. Cumulative survival was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method. Results Partial (5) or complete (22) ablation of the embolized kidneys was achieved in all cases. Follow-up CT after 1 month revealed Lipiodol uptake in the tumor area (14/14), decreased size of the tumor (6/14), and gas formation (7/14). Pulmonary metastasis improved significantly in one patient after transcatheter arterial embolization and adjunctive chemotherapy. Overall median survival of the 27 patients was 8.5 months. The median survival was 23 months in 10 patients with stage III, three of whom are still alive, and was 7 months in 15 patients with stage IV tumors. Conclusion The mixture of ethanol and Lipiodol is not only a convenient embolic material to use, but is also effective for selective or nonselective devascularization for unresectable renal cell carcinoma.

Notes: Abstract Four patients underwent endovascular treatment of vascular injuries complicating lumbar spinal surgery. In two patients with massive retroperitoneal hemorrhage, the extravasating lumbar arteries were successfully embolized with microcoils. Two patients with large iliac arteriovenous fistula (AVF) were treated, one with embolization using a detachable balloon and coils, which failed, and the other with placement of a stent graft after embolization of distal runoff vessels, which occluded the fistula. We conclude that acute arterial laceration or delayed AVF complicating lumbar spinal surgery can be managed effectively with selective embolization or stent-graft placement, respectively.

Notes: Summary Clinical and angiographic features of Takayasu arteritis were investigated in 129 Korean patients. This disease affects females more frequently than males, in a ratio of 6.6 to 1. Of the total number of patients, 51 were in the third decade, 27 in the fourth decade, and 23 in the second decade. Common clinical symptoms were headache (60%), exertional dyspnea (42%), dizziness (36%), and malaise or weakness (34%). Takayasu arteritis affected the abdominal aorta (46%) and descending thoracic aorta (37%) more frequently than the ascending aorta (1%) and aortic arch (2%) According to Ueno's classification based on aortographic findings, the 129 patients were divided into type I (37), type II (25), and type III (67). Among the 48 patients who had coronary angiography, 11 (23%) showed coronary arterial involvement. Because the clinical features are determined by the extent and severity of the specific artery involved in the occlusive phase of the disease, total aortography including coronary angiography is very important in the initial evaluation of Takayasu arteritis.
