    Notes: A denitrifying bacterium, strain YG1, capable of degrading pyrrolidine under denitrifying conditions, was isolated. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, it was identified as a member of the genus Pseudomonas. During the anaerobic degradation of pyrrolidine, YG1 reduced a stoichiometric amount of nitrate to nitrogen gas, demonstrating that the degradation of pyrrolidine is coupled with respiratory nitrate reduction. YG1 also degraded pyrrolidine with a higher degradation rate under aerobic conditions than under denitrifying conditions.

    Notes: Summary From the anoxic zone of an oil shale leachate column three pyridine-degrading bacterial strains were isolated. Two strains were Gram-negative facultative anaerobic rods and one strain was a branched Gram-positive bacterium. The branched Gram-positive strain had the best pyridine-degrading ability. This organism was aerobic, non-motile, catalase positive, oxidase negative, and had no flagellum. The G+C content of the DNA was 66.5 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H2). The main cellular fatty acids were saturated and monounsaturated straight chains. This organism contained mycolic acid, meso-diaminopimelic acid, arabinogalactan and glycolyl residues in the cell wall. Due to morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics this strain was placed in the genus Rhodococcus. The optimum culture conditions were as follows: temperature 32° C, pH 8.0 and 0.1% v/v of pyridine as sole carbon, energy and nitrogen source. Utilization of pyridine by a batch fermentor culture of Rhodococcus sp. was characterized by a specific growth rate of 0.13 h−1, growth yield of 0.61 mg cell·mg pyridine−1 and a doubling time of 5.3 h−1.

    Notes: AZ31 Mg alloy matrix composites were fabricated by squeeze casting method to improvehigh temperature properties in this study. The results showed that Mg composites reinforced withAlborex and Ag revealed improved high temperature properties and mechanical properties comparedwith Mg alloys. High temperature hardness and flexural strength were increased with reinforcementof Alborex, and further increase was obtained with addition of Ag. Also, Alborex reinforced AZ31containing Ag Mg matrix composite exhibited greater improvement on creep properties. ThereforeMg composites reinforced with Alborex containing Ag were better than those reinforced withAlborex in mechanical properties and high temperature properties

    Notes: A theoretical model is applied to the analysis of thermomechanical properties of Al-SiCpFGMs in this study. Functionally graded Al-SiCp composites (Al-SiCp FGMs) consisted with 10layers gradually changing volume fractions of Al and SiCp were fabricated using the pressurelessinfiltration technique. Al-SiCp FGMs plates of total thickness of 3mm, 5mm and 7mm with fairlyuniform distribution and compositional gradient of SiCp reinforcement in the Al matrix throughoutthe thickness was successfully fabricated. The curvature of Al-SiCp FGM plates was measured tocheck the internal stress distribution predicted via a theoretical model for the analysis of thermomechanicaldeformation. The evolution of curvature and also internal stresses in response totemperature variations could be predicted for the different combinations of geometric thickness ofFGM plates. Theoretical prediction of thermally induced stress distribution makes it possible todesign FGM structures without any critical failure during the usage of them

    Notes: Abstract Two rRNA gene clusters were detected in the genome of Bifidobacterium bifidum KCTC 3202T using Southern blot analysis. To analyse the sequences of the 16S rRNA genes from rrnA and rrnB, 16S rDNAs were amplified by PCR using DNA fragments purified from gel slices containing each of the rRNA gene clusters. The amplified 16S rDNAs from rrnA and rrnB were cloned into vectors and three clones of each gene sequenced. The resultant sequences were confirmed by direct sequencing of the 16S rDNAs from rrnA and rrnB. Sequence differences were not found between rrnA and rrnB in 1488 bp of the 16S rRNA genes.

    Notes: Abstract A system was developed to evaluate the effects of root growth of cotton seedlings on the inoculum dynamics ofGliocladium virens in nonsterile soil. In soil infested withG. virens, inoculum densities of the fungus increased when plants remained alive. After 30 days, shoots were excised and the roots allowed to deteriorate. During this portion of the experiment (30–60 days) soil inoculum densities ofG. virens declined. In infested soil without a seedling, inoculum densities remained constant throughout the duration of the experiments. Colonization of roots byG. virens was found to increase throughout the duration of the experiments. At 60 daysG. virens was recovered from approximately 60% of the root pieces (1-cm) sampled. The percentage of primary, secondary, or tertiary roots colonized was different (P = 0.01), but the total colonization of roots at three depths (0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm) was not different (P = 0.64). In noninfested soil, colonization of roots by indigenous propagules ofG. virens was never greater than 3%.

    Notes: Abstract 5S ribosomal RNA sequences were determined for thirteen actinomycetes mainly representatives with the rare group B type peptidoglycan. The primary and secondary structure of the resultant sequences were of the type characteristic of Gram-positive bacteria with DNA rich in guanine plus cytosine. The sequencing and associated chemotaxonomic data provide compelling grounds for classifying actinomycetes with a group B type peptidoglycan in a single family. The familyMicrobacteriaceae fam. nov. is proposed to accommodate actinomycetes classified in the generaAgromyces, Aureobacterium, Clavibacter, Curtobacterium andMicrobacterium.
