    Notes: A study is made of the luminescence intensities associated with exciton diffusion and trapping on a three-dimensional anisotropic percolating lattice. The calculation is based upon a relationship that exists between the frequency dependent diffusion tensor at frequencies comparable to the inverse excitation lifetime, and luminescence observables such as the host and trap luminescence intensities for conditions of constant illumination. The present approach allows the study of crossover behavior in percolative systems that are of intermediate transport dimensionality 2〈dt〈3. Our results suggest that curvature seen in luminescence observables near the transition need not always be a direct reflection of the critical indices associated with classical isotropic percolation. We have identified three possible sources of deviation from the classical behavior: (1) the radiative time scale of the luminescence measurements, (2) the functional dependence of the luminescence yields on the diffusion tensor, and (3) the demands of dimensional crossover in the critical region arising from the anisotropy of the medium.

    Notes: The evolution of a particle undergoing a continuous-time random walk in the presence of randomly placed imperfectly absorbing traps is studied. At long times, the spatial probability distribution becomes strongly localized in a sequence of trap-free regions. The subsequent intermittent transfer of the survival probability from small trap-free regions to larger trap-free regions is described as a time-directed variable range hopping among localized eigenstates in the Lifshitz tail. An asymptotic expression for the configurational average of the spatial distribution of surviving particles is obtained based on this description. The distribution is an exponential function of distance which expands superdiffusively, with the mean-square displacement increasing with time as t2/ln(2D+4)/D(t) in D dimensions.

    Notes: We consider the problem of a single quantum oscillator coupled linearly to a heat bath of independent harmonic modes. An exact solution is presented for the system-oscillator observables of interest. The exact results are then used to evaluate the utility of a variational approach to the problem that has proven useful recently in elucidating the dynamics of dissipatively coupled systems. We find that the variational approach does provide a good description for most, but not all, observables of interest. Both the exact and the variational treatment demonstrate the important role played by the low-frequency bath modes in determining qualitative features of the dynamical behavior.

    Notes: The low-field mobility μ of a small concentration of charge carriers hopping among a random distribution of transport sites is studied, as a function of the mean interparticle spacing ρ and the temperature T, for model systems having different site-energy distribution functions. For a uniform density of states our calculations show that the mobility obeys empirical scaling laws similar to those found in the theory of variable-range hopping. For a binary distribution of site energies we observe a crossover as a function of site density between trap-limited conduction and trap-mediated conduction. For a Gaussian density of states our results confirm the quadratic inverse temperature dependence of lnμ found in Monte Carlo studies, although quantitative characterization of this dependence is found to depend sensitively on the degree of spatial disorder in ways that could impact the extraction of microscopic parameters from experimental data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss theoretical work on motion-limited trapping kinetics at very low temperatures where theories based upon strictly diffusive models break down due to quantum mechanical effects. In addition, we present numerical results which confirm earlier asymptotic predictions regarding the survival probability for one-dimensional chains, and discuss the important role fluctuations and selfaveraging (or the lack thereof) play in the analysis of finite systems.

    Notes: Abstract Exact calculations are presented for the survival fraction and other capturerelated observables in a problem involving migration on a one-dimensional lattice containing perfectly absorbing traps whose placement within the crystal is determined by explicit interactions among the trap molecules. These interactions, which are treated exactly in a lattice-gas model, may be attractive, in which case they lead to trap cluster formation and a reduction of the trapping efficiency, or they may be repulsive thus leading to increased separation of the trap molecules and an enhancement of the trapping process.

    Notes: The time-of-flight mobility of photoinjected charges in molecularly doped polymers obeys a Poole-Frenkel law, μ ∝ exp(\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\gamma \sqrt E $\end{document}), which is commonly viewed as arising from hopping transport among sites with a large degree of energetic disorder. Recent theoretical investigations have focused on long-range correlations that characterize site energies when the dominant mechanism for energetic fluctuations is the interaction of charge carriers with randomly-oriented permanent dipoles of the dopant and host polymer. An exact calculation of the steady-state drift velocity vd for a one-dimensional system with correlated dipolar disorder predicts a Poole-Frenkel law similar to that observed. In order to investigate another feature commonly observed in the high-field measurements, namely, the anomalous dispersion of the current-time transients, we have performed an exact calculation of the field-dependent diffusion constant D for the same dipolar disorder model. In the bulk limit we obtain an expression D = (KT/e) ∂vd/∂E that generalizes the normal Einstein relation and predicts a strongly field-dependent diffusion constant. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
