    Notes: Abstract The distribution of Th(IV) between aqueous sulphuric acid and organic phases of N-n-octylaniline in xylene is described. The dependence of the metal extraction on acidity and extractant concentration is investigated. Based on the results obtained, the possible extraction mechanism is discussed. The determination of Th(IV) and its separation from synthetic mixtures is suggested. The method is extended to the analysis of thorium in monazite and gas mantles.

    Notes: Single- and two-ply yarns of different counts were swollen slack under optimum conditions in aqueous zinc chloride and stretched back to original length. While two-ply yarns showed an improvement in tenacity that was less pronounced in finer counts, single yarns always showed a fall in tenacity. Various properties of the treated yarns like packing fraction, fiber and yarn orientation, cross-sectional morphology, etc. were evaluated to ascertain the likely factors responsible for the differential behavior of the chemically treated single- and two-ply yarns.

    Notes: Easy-care finishing of cotton fabrics invariably results in the loss of mechanical properties of the fabrics. There have been many attempts from time to time by different workers to reduce the above loss in the mechanical properties. But the problem is yet to be resolved satisfactory. As the uniform distribution of cross-links in the resin-finished structure of cellulose is the key for achieving a better balance of mechanical properties, the present work aims at a suitable modification of the cellulose matrix to achieve the goal. The paper reports the mechanical properties of the modified and cross-linked cotton yarn. The cross-linked samples of the modification treatment involving swelling the yarn at normal stretch with 20% NaOH and partially acetylating without washing off the alkali have displayed higher tenacity, elongation, and toughness, with better easy-care properties as compared to the control.

    Notes: The details of an infrared technique standardized to analyze cotton-polyester blends of different compositions are reported. It is observed that particle size plays a very important role in the peak intensity of the 1725 cm-1 band (C=O stretching) in polyester, the absorption band recommended for analysis of cotton-polyester blends. However, the product of the band width and peak intensity is found to be dependent on particle size to a lesser extent and hence is a more reliable parameter in the measurement of percentage composition. It has further been shown that the method of sample preparation can affect the band width and hence the results. A suitable sample preparation procedure is, therefore, described whereby an accuracy of ±3% in the estimation of polyester content in a given blend can be achieved.

    Notes: Kinetic studies of swelling of cotton cellulose with 75% (w/w) EDA solution have been carried out. Three rates of the reaction were observed in the temperature range 10-35°C: first, the very fast rate (k1) lasting for about 10 s; second, the extremely slow rate (k2) lasting for 30-50 s; and third, once again a fast rate (k3), k1 being faster than k3. k1 was attributed to the swelling action of EDA-monohydrate in amorphous regions of cellulose; k2 was assigned to the penetration of swelling species into crystallities accompanied by breakage of H bonds in these regions; and k3 was assigned to the opening up of the crystallites. Activation energy values confirmed this trend. At higher temperatures (35-55°C), the middle rate k2 merged with k3, giving only two rates, k1 and k2+3, as the higher temperatures brought about simultaneous diffusion of swelling agent into, and decrystallization of, the crystalline portions of cellulose. EDA solution of 65% (w/w) concentration gave only two rates: the initial fast rate assigned to the swelling of the amorphous portion, followed by a slow one, operating in mesomorphous regions of cellulose, without any appreciable decrystallization. This was atributed to the important fact, viz., the absence of EDA-monohydrates in the solution.

    Notes: Cotton fibers were treated with anhydrous mixtures of ethylenediamine and morpholine of varying proportions to study the changes in accessibility (X-ray crystallinity index, swelling by propanol-2 retention, formylaiton, and dyeability) as well as lattice conversions from cellulose I to cellulose II and cellulose III. Positive synergistic influence of the highest order was noticed at 70:30 (molar proportion 3:1) ethylenediamine-morpholine mixture as judged from accessibility and lattice conversion from cellulose I to cellulose II. The same critical proportion was found to give the highest order of negative synergistic effect in the lattice conversion of cellulose I into cellulose III. These opposing trends have been explained on the basis of the different mechanisms associated with the lattice conversions of cellulose I into cellulose II and cellulose III.
