Notes: Abstract This paper give a methodology, PROLOG code, as well as an example of an explanation facility EN applicable to most neural networks. It involves How?, Why? and TRACE facilities, and is based on a general explanation degree calculation in a multilayer neural network, as well as on input node characterization grammars for synthesis of explanation text.

Notes: Abstract This paper reviews some knowledge representation approaches devoted to the sensor fusion problem, as encountered whenever images, signals, text must be combined to provide the input to a controller or to an inference procedure. The basic steps involved in the derivation of the knowledge representation scheme, are: (A) locate a representation, based on exogeneous context information (B) compare two representations to find out if they refer to the same object/entity (C) merge sensor-based features from the various representations of the same object into a new set of features or attributes, (D) aggregate the representations into a joint fused representation, usually more abstract than each of the sensor-related representations. The importance of sensor fusion stems first from the fact that it is generally correct to assume that improvements in control law simplicity and robustness, as well as better classification results, can be achieved by combining diverse information sources. The second element, is that, e.g., spatially distributed sensing, or otherwise diverse sensing, does indeed require fusion as well.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a novel shape classification technique in computer vision called PDL-HM, which combines the selection of morphological structuring elements from contour description languages, the extraction of shape characteristics by the hit- and-miss transform, and shape classification by a neural network. This real-time method is orientation independent and tolerates limited object overlap. It is illustrated by an application to fish species classification in an industrial enviromnent and performs excellently

Notes: Abstract Patterns are formalized as operators, which may be compared on the basis of an equivalence relation, of a metricd, and of probability measures. The general pattern recognition problem for metric and probabilistic patterns is then formulated, referring to the formalism of U. Grenander; identification and detection are shown to be special cases hereof. A list of possible distancesd between patterns is then given, including a suggested distance between line patterns; wider applications of some of these distances are suggested. This paper has a theoretical concern, but it nevertheless aims at letting pattern recognition draw benefit from techniques which are similar in theory, but which are curiously still considered as distinct in practice.

Notes: Abstract This paper surveys reasoning and inference strategies as especially relevant for knowledge based systems in economics and management. This requires elements of object oriented features, numerical and text constraints, search over time, game power conflict resolution. Specific functionalities are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A display system using multivariate analysis and signal compression methods is described; it serves for the analysis of complex dynamic phenomena via curves in a 2-dimensional coordinate system. Differential diagnosis is then possible, simply by comparing visually the relative variations and differences of shape for these curves. Two major applications are given: (a) 2-dimensional display of hand tremor, for reference testing in relation to the positive diagnosis of ataxia and the differential diagnosis of extrapyramidal syndrome, including the Parkinson syndrome. (b) Visual feedback to the patient when performing tracking tasks in relation to the differential diagnosis of tremor or in training for the use of limbs. The main use of the computer is for the determination of the appropriate settings for the display system, depending on the test to be made. Processing of a substantial number of tremor records leads to a discrimination among tremor types.
