Notizen: The effects of the inability of suspension-feeding protozoa to collect bacteria over the whole range of sizes in the bacterial size distribution were examined by constructing mathematical models based on this assumption. Systems of suspension-feeding protozoa grown on both growing and nongrowing bacteria were examined in both batch and continuous culture. The models were able to predict three experimental observations common in such systems. Some additional features of the systems which should be useful in interpreting results of experiments with suspension feeding protozoa and in designing new experiments were predicted, also.

Notizen: The equations of a chemostat in which one microbial population grows on multiple rate-limiting nutrients are formulated. The dynamics of a chemostat involving growth on complementary nutrients is studied through stability analysis of the system of equations. Some conditions are derived that relate the dynamic behavior of the chemostat to its operating conditions and can be applied to any model for the specific growth rate of the population. It is shown that, if maintenance of the population is neglected, the system exhibits no sustained or damped oscillations. If maintenance of the population is considered, damped oscillations are observed for some operating conditions.

Notizen: A mathematical model for an ideal chemostat in which one microbial population feeds on another and where Monod's model is used for the specific growth rates of both populations predicts a less stable behavior for the system than the one observed experimentally. Various factors have been proposed as being the reason for the increased stability of such systems. In this work, the effect of spatial heterogeneity on the dynamics of the microbial feeding interaction is studied. It is concluded that spatial heterogeneity has a stabilizing effect on the system. This effect combined with other factors could be the reason for the increased stability observed in systems where a microbial feeding interaction occurs.

Notizen: Mixed cultures of the protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis and the bacterium Escherichia coli were propagated in chemostats fed with glucose and minimal mineral salts medium. The interior surfaces of some chemostats were treated with a silicone compound but those of other chemostats were not. Data obtained showed that bacteria but not protozoans were attached strongly to the walls of the chemostats, that silicone treatment reduced the density of the attached bacteria by two orders of magnitude or more, and that the presence of the attached bacteria had significant effects on the dynamics of the microbial predator-prey system. Attempts were made to simulate the data by various mathematical models. It was found that a model based on combination of the Topiwala-Hamer model for wall attachment and a multiple saturation model for growth of the protozoans on the bacteria gave a reasonable fit of all the data.

Notizen: Under certain simplifying hypotheses, a chemostat in which one microbial population feeds on another can be described by a system of three ordinary differential equations. A study is conducted to find which features of the equations are the most important to the dynamics of the system; it is found that the main influence comes from the from the particular form of the specific growth rate of the feeding population. Some conditions are derived that relate the form of the specific growth rate of the feeding population to the dynamic behaviour of the system.
