Notes: [Auszug] The usual practice is to select spores in slide mounts which are so oriented that they are seen in surface view. The surface is then examined in two focal planes. In the upper focus of the microscope the raised structures on the spore surface (here rounded warts or pointed spines) are seen as ...

Notes: Abstract Nuclear divisions taking place in the hyphae ofPythium aphanidermatum have been described. Typical prophase type of nuclei with elongate chromatin fibres have been observed. Achromatic structures resembling spindle fibres with well defined poles during anaphase configuration have been noticed. A mild pretreatment with acenaphthene vapours proved instrumental in arresting the progress of nuclear division. Stages similar to early and late anaphase and telophase with deeply staining chromosomal masses have been observed. A high concentration of acenaphthene treatment resulted in the formation of giant nuclei.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Although Johannessen claims (Nature 332, 587; 1988) that the object in the hands of the goddess in Somnathpur temple represents a maize ear, there is no evidence of maize cultivation at the time of construction of the temple in the thirteenth century AD, either in Karna-taka or elsewhere in ...

Notes: Summary It has been determined that the occurrence of ‘durable resistance’ as defined by Johnson and Kranz operates in maize inbred lines CM104 and CM105 against the leaf blight pathogens Setosphaeria turcica (= Exserohilum turcicum) and Drechslera maydis (=Cochliobolus heterostrophus), by analyzing data for 16 and 14 years, respectively. Essentially the methodology estimated the longevity of cultivar resistance by determining whether the regression coefficient of linear regression with years of testing and mean disease intensity is zero or not significantly different from zero. The values for both Turcicum Leaf Blight and Maydis Leaf Blight were not significantly different from zero. The resistant inbred lines have been used in hybrid combinations and have the potential to transmit this resistance to progenies in hybrid combinations that are governed by additive gene action.

Notes: Summary With a view to study their morphology, shape and surface markings, urediospores of 8 species of rusts were examined in 45 % acetic acid. The shape classes were determined by calculating ratios of polar and equatorial axes of 100 spores and then matching them with those given byErdtman (1954). A guide figure, adapted fromErdtman (1954), has been included here as figure 1. The urediospore shapes in the 8 rusts discussed here preponderated as follows: Crossopsora zizyphi — prolate or perprolate;Phragmidiella heterophragmae — prolate spheroidal or spheroidal;Puccinia dietelii — prolate, prolate spheroidal or spheroidal;P. operta — prolate;P. purpurea — prolate;Puccinia sp. onAsystasia mysurensis — prolate, prolate spheroidal;Scopella aulica — prolate, prolate spheroidal;S. gentilis — prolate, prolate spheroidal. It has been found that there exists a narrow achromatic passage in the secondary wall (where present) above the hila of somewhat immature spores. The spore, right upto the time of its shedding, thus seems to have a means of drawing in the cytoplasm, or communicating with, the sorus constituents. In mature spores this opening may be occluded by the development of I- or Y- shaped partitions, wart-like plugs or plano convex thickenings in the secondary wall. LO-analysis which consists of observing the spore walls at successive adjustments of the microscope, has been conducted on two allied species —Scopella aulica andS. gentilis. It has been suggested that LO-analysis might be useful in the Taxonomic and Morphologic differentiation of species as well as in the study of fungal air spora and fossil spores.
