    Notes: Steam volatile fractions obtained from three commercial mayhaw cultivars and two native selections were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Twenty-four compounds were identified. The nine major components, which comprised 70–80% of the volatile fraction, were hexanal, butyl acetate, (E)-2-hexenal, butyl butyrate, linalool, butyl hexanoate, methyl octanoate, pentyl hexanoate, and hexyl hexanoate. Minor constituents included eight esters, four terpenes, two benzenoid compounds and (E)-2-hexenol.

    Notes: Immunocytochemical visualization of the neuron-specific K+/Cl– cotransporter, KCC2, at the cellular and subcellular level revealed an area- and layer-specific diffuse labelling, and a discrete staining outlining the somata and dendrites of some interneurons in all areas of the rat hippocampus. KCC2 was highly expressed in parvalbumin-containing interneurons, as well as in subsets of calbindin, calretinin and metabotropic glutamate receptor 1a-immunoreactive interneurons. During the first 2 postnatal weeks, an increase of KCC2 staining was observed in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus, correlating temporally with the arrival of entorhinal cortical inputs. Subcellular localization demonstrated KCC2 in the plasma membranes. Immunoreactivity in principal cells was responsible for the diffuse staining found in the neuropil. In these cells, KCC2 was detected primarily in dendritic spine heads, at the origin of spines and, at a much lower level on the somata and dendritic shafts. KCC2 expression was considerably higher in the somata and dendrites of interneurons, most notably of parvalbumin-containing cells, as well as in the thorny excrescences of CA3 pyramidal cells and in the spines of spiny hilar and stratum lucidum interneurons. The data indicate that KCC2 is highly expressed in the vicinity of excitatory inputs in the hippocampus, perhaps in close association with extrasynaptic GABAA receptors. A high level of excitation is known to lead to a simultaneous net influx of Na+ and Cl–, as evidenced by dendritic swelling. KCC2 located in the same microenvironment may provide a Cl– extrusion mechanism to deal with both ion and water homeostasis in addition to its role in setting the driving force of Cl– currents involved in fast postsynaptic inhibition.

    Notes: In the thalamus of the rat the reversal potential of GABA-induced anion currents is more negative in relay cells than in neurones of the reticular nucleus (nRt) due to different chloride extrusion mechanisms operating in these cells. The distribution of KCl cotransporter type 2 (KCC2), the major neuronal chloride transporter that may underlie this effect, is unknown in the thalamus. In this study the precise regional and ultrastructural localization of KCC2 was examined in the thalamus using immunocytochemical methods. The neuropil of all relay nuclei was found to display intense KCC2 immunostaining to varying degrees. In sharp contrast, the majority of the nRt was negative for KCC2. In the anterior and dorsal part of the nRt, however, KCC2 immunostaining was similar to relay nuclei and parvalbumin and calretinin were found to colocalize with KCC2. At the ultrastructural level, KCC2 immunoreactivity was mainly located in the extrasynaptic membranes of thick and thin dendrites and the somata of relay cells but was also found in close association with asymmetrical synapses formed by cortical afferents. Quantitative evaluation of KCC2 distribution at the electron microscopic level demonstrated that the density of KCC2 did not correlate with dendritic diameter or synaptic coverage but is 1.7 times higher on perisynaptic membrane surfaces than on extrasynaptic membranes. Our data demonstrate that the regional distribution of KCC2 is compatible with the difference in GABA-A reversal potential between relay and reticular nuclei. At the ultrastructural level, abundant extrasynaptic KCC2 expression will probably play a role in the regulation of extrasynaptic GABA-A receptor-mediated inhibition.

    Notes: Steam volatile fractions from astringent and nonastringent persimmons (Diospyros kaki L.) and the native American persimmon (D. virginiana L.) were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Bomyl acetate and (E)-2-hexenal were major components from all cultivars. Minor constituents included (E)-2-hexenol, phenylacetaldehyde, phenylethyl acetate, borneol, benzothiazole, neryl acetate, palmitic acid and two saturated normal hydrocarbons (C23H48 and C25H52). From threshold values and concentrations, (E)-2-hexenal and bornyl acetate probably are major contributors of persimmon aroma.

    Notes: Abstract The concentrations of free and bound abscisic acid (ABA and the presumed ABA glucose ester) increased three- to fourfold in leaves of White Burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) systemically infected with tobacco mosaic virus. Infected leaves developed a distinct mosaic of light-green and dark-green areas. The largest increases in both free and bound ABA occurred in dark-green areas. In contrast, virus accumulated to a much higher concentration in light-green tissue. Free ABA in healthy leaves was contained predominantly within the chloroplasts while the majority of bound ABA was present in non-chloroplastic fractions. Chloroplasts from light-green or dark-green tissues were able to increase stromal pH on illumination by an amount similar to chloroplasts from healthy leaf. It is unlikely therefore that any virus-induced diminution of pH gradient is responsible for increased ABA accumulation. Tobacco mosaic virus infection had little effect on free ABA concentration in chloroplasts; the virus-induced increase in free ABA occurred predominantly out-side the chloroplast. The proportional distribution of bound ABA in the cell was not changed by infection. Treatment of healthy plants with ABA or water stress increased chlorophyll concentration by an amount similar to that induced by infection in dark-green areas of leaf. A role for increased ABA concentration in the development of mosaic symptoms is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Extracts of the sex pheromone glands of femaleCydia caryana were evaluated by electroantennography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. These studies suggested the following compounds were potential sex pheromone components: (Z)-8- and/or (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (50 pg/female), dodecyl acetate (40 pg/female), and (E, E)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate (25 pg/female). In field tests only the diene produced trap catch, and when the other components were added to the diene, trap catch was not increased. When the diene was formulated in red natural rubber septa, only transient and low catches were obtained, but when gray halobutyl isoprene elastomeric septa were used, high and consistent catches were obtained for eight weeks. Catches depended on the ratio of (E, E)-8,10 to (E, Z)-8,10 isomers. High catches were obtained for anEE toEZ ratio of 100 ∶ 0.6, and insignificant catches were obtained when the ratio was 100 ∶ 3. Equivalent catches were obtained for dosages of 50, 100, and 200 μg/septum.
