    Notes: A 64-point fiber-optic fluorescence array is integrated into a heated-packed bed to study free convection in porous media. The array consists of 64 individual fluorescence coupler-detector modules. The array modules are designed for rhodamine 6G dye and allow real-time measurement of tracer concentrations to about 40 ppb. The coupler-detectors are inexpensive and allow a single fiber to carry both the excitation light and the emitted fluorescence light between the detectors and the remote probe terminations at known locations within the bed. Dilute pulses of tracer dye are injected into the packed bed and the dye concentration at each of the 64 fiber-optic probe terminations is monitored as a function of elapsed time. The tracer concentration as a function of time and position allows the fluid movement to be followed within the porous medium.

    Notes: Abstract From the measurement of the widths of internal oxidation zones in dilute Pb-Sn alloys, the product of the solubility N o (s) and diffusivity Do of oxygen in lead was obtained from 225 to 320° C. The enhancement factor for Sn was calculated from the experimental values of N o (s) Do and compared to the results obtained by x-ray fluorescence measurements. The results indicated that the “aging” of Pb-Sn alloys observed at high temperatures is due to internal oxidation which causes the migration of tin toward the specimen surface.

    Notes: Abstract The oxygen activity of liquid lead was measured using a calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte cell inserted into the melt. The oxygen activity was monitored as small additions of Ca or Ba were made to the melt. The oxygen activity dropped rapidly after the addition, and the melt became oxidation-resistant as the oxygen activity increased back to the pre-addition level. The oxidation resistance was attributed to a thin PbO layer, containing a high density of imperfections, on the melt surface.

    Notes: Abstract A method is described of measuring a wall shear stress distribution that varies in the direction of the flow. Variations in the height of a very thin oil film moving under the boundary layer generate interference fringes, which are recorded and digitised using image processing equipment. The evolution of the film surface in space and time can be reconstructed from the interference fringe patterns and used to calculate the shear stress field. This reconstruction is achieved by comparing the picture data with images that were calculated for prescribed heights that are adjusted iteratively, until the calculated intensities match the data. The method is applied to a flow approaching a step, and the results are compared with pulsed-wire measurements.

    Notes: Abstract The paper details results from an experimental study on bubbles rising in still tap water. Shape and motion parameters of the bubbles were measured using a combination of high speed cinematography and digital image processing. The Reynolds numbers of the bubbles studied ranged from about 700 to 1300, with the bubbles exhibiting all the familiar shape and motion characteristics: oblate spheroids becoming “wobbly”, and spiralling or zig-zagging motion becoming “rocking” as the bubble size increased. Time series of the bubble major axes revealed regular oscillations in the bubble shape. In most cases three frequencies could be readily identified, corresponding to those of vortex shedding from the bubble and two modes of ellipsoidal harmonics (modes 2,0 and 2,2). Comparison of time series of bubble shape and motion indicated a strong interaction between the shape oscillations of mode 2,0 and bubble motion. As the bubble size increased the frequency of both shape oscillation modes approached that of the vortex shedding, which remained constant at about 12 Hz for all of our experiments. The frequencies become equal for bubbles larger than in our study, at a Reynolds number of about 3000. Using data from the literature we found that the vortex shedding appears to become locked-in on the mode 2,0 shape oscillation.
