Notes: Abstract With access to computers becoming more generally available the methods of analysis need not be limited either by complexity or by the time taken when performed manually. It is usually expedient to process as much as possible in the laboratory, but decisions now need to be made regarding the relative merits of software and hardware methods, which in certain circumstances become alternatives. These are dicussed for the processing and analysis of the data obtained during a physiological experiment and the techniques for specific equipment and computation are described.

Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional computer modelling system has been developed for use in biology, and is currently running on a Sun3 computer. The data originate as a series of two-dimensional micrographs which are digitised via a TV camera. The two-dimensional images are used to select features of interest and to construct a three-dimensional model. This model can be viewed in vector or solid format, it can be rotated about three orthogonal axes and can be viewed in three dimensions as a stereo pair or an anaglyph. The system has been used in a large number of projects over the past 10–15 years, for example, to examine physiological and nerve structures. The time-consuming part of the process is the selection of features, which involves a high level of biological expertise. Present developments are concerned with reduction of the time spent in feature recognition and involve the introduction of expert systems together with human-computer interaction to deal with problems of identification.

Notes: Abstract A method of recording simultaneous events on a miniature wire recorder is described with simple on/off modulation of four audio frequencies. Any variable that can be converted to an on/off signal can be recorded so that in some cases simple mechanical switches may be used as the transducers, and in other cases electrical signals are converted to on/off pulses. Circuit details of the system and the transducers are given.

Notes: Abstract In biology it is often necessary to assess changes over a period of time. In this study assessments of the movements of small particles (lysosomes) in macrophage cells over different time periods were made using two methods. The first was a qualitative assessment using computer graphics, where the positions of the lysosomes were compared over a time period using colour to highlight whether a change had occurred. The second was a quantitative assessment of movement using a statistical nearest-neighbour method. Both techniques were used in a study of the effects of certain drugs on macrophage cells.
