    Notes: Abstract Effective elastic coefficients for a normal Fermi liquid at finite frequency ω and wave vectorq are calculated microscopically from the Landau kinetic equation. We find in general that there are three elastic moduli in a normal Fermi liquid. One is just the usual bulk modulus and the other two are associated with the transverse and longitudinal shears of the liquid. This is in contrast to the viscoelastic model, in which a single modulus characterizes both transverse and longitudinal shear. The shear moduli that we have calculated are functions of ω/qv F, wherev F is the Fermi velocity, and they become equal only when ω/q is much larger thanv F. In this limit we show that a viscoelastic model provides a reasonable quantitative description of the propagation and attenuation of the collective modes of a normal Fermi liquid. We also consider the applicability of the viscoelastic model to3He and find that it provides a reasonable first approximation to longitudinal sound and only a crude first approximation to transverse sound.

    Notes: The mobility tensor of negative ions in the A phase of superfluid 3He is calculated for temperatures close to T c . In this regime the scattering of superfluid quasiparticles from an electron bubble is practically elastic and the mobility tensor is expressed in terms of momentum transfer cross sections for an ion at rest. These generalized transport cross sections are obtained from the quasiparticle-ion scattering T-matrix, which we evaluate in terms of the normal state scattering amplitude. The p-wave pairing correlations in the intermediate states result in important interference effects among all partial waves in the scattering process, and, in addition, for the low-energy quasiparticles they lead to resonant states below the gap edge. These phenomena modify the scattering amplitude in the superfluid in an essential way and the differential quasiparticle-ion cross section is found to display strongly anisotropic, energy-dependent variations on the scale of the superfluid energy gap. We find that, in contrast to simple approximations, for low quasiparticle energies the parallel and perpendicular momentum transfer cross sections are very different from one another. Close to T c , the calculated mobility remains rather isotropic, but at lower temperatures the anisotropy is considerably larger than predicted by simple approximations for the cross section. The computed results are compared with the available measurements.

    Notes: Abstract The behavior of the specific heat of liquid3He as a function of temperature implies a rapid variation of effective mass with energy. Recently a model has been developed for understanding this. In this paper we extend this model to explain the low-temperature (T≦100 mK) specific heat measurements of normal liquid3He by Greywall. We find that the model gives a reasonably accurate description of the data in this temperature range.

    Notes: Abstract We present a general formalism based on the quasiclassical Green's function for calculating charge imbalance in nonequilibrium superconductors. Our discussion is sufficiently general that it applies at arbitrary temperatures, and under conditions when the width of quasiparticle states are appreciable due to pair breaking processes, and when strong coupling effects are significant. As a first application we demonstrate in detail how in the limit of small pair breaking and for a weak coupling superconductor the collision term in the formalism reduces to the one in the quasiparticle Boltzmann equation. We next treat the case of charge imbalance generated by tunnel injection, with pair breaking by phonons and magnetic impurities. Over the range of temperatures investigated experimentally to date, the calculated charge imbalance is rather close to that evaluated using the Boltzmann equation, even if pair breaking is so strong as almost to destroy superconductivity. Finally we consider charge imbalance generated by the combined influence of a supercurrent and a temperature gradient. We give calculations for a dirty superconductor with scattering by phonons as the pair breaking mechanism, and the results give a reasonable account of the experimental data of Clarke, Fjordbøge, and Lindelof. We carry out calculations for the case of impurity scattering alone which are valid not only in the clean and dirty limits, but also for intermediate situations. These enable us to see how the large contribution to the charge imbalance found for energies close to the gap edge in the clean case is reduced with increasing impurity scattering.

    Notes: Abstract The striking behavior of the specific heat of liquid3He as function of temperature at low temperatures requires the effective massm* to change rapidly with temperature; this can be translated into a rapid variation with energy,m*/m dropping from itsE=0 value to ∼1 over the temperature range ≲0.5 K. We explore this effect in a model in which the enhancement of the effective mass is due to coupling to spin fluctuations. At very lowT≲50 mK, the variation in specific heat results fromT 3 lnT terms. The free energy, on the other hand, does not containT 2 lnT terms in its dependence on the magnetic field, implying that the susceptibility, which is essentiallym*/(1+F 0 a ), also does not have such logarithmic terms. Consequently, ifm* varies with energy, so mustF 0 a , so as to leave the susceptibility free of this rapid variation. The rough constancy ofm*/(1+F 0 a ) seems empirically to hold to higher energies and temperatures. Ifm*/m drops, with increasing energy, to unity, the spin-fluctuation theory, which is described in terms of Landau parameters at the Fermi surface, goes over into the paramagnon theory. The rapid change with energy of the effective interactions can be understood within the framework of response theory as a “shaking off” of the relevant collective modes with increasing frequency of the imposed oscillations. The changes in effective interactions have consequences for the interpretation of experiments involving inelastic neutron scattering from liquid3He.

    Notes: The voltage drop at a normal-superconducting boundary is considered in the case when the current flowing across the boundary is of the order of the critical current of the superconductor. The finite supercurrent decreases the distance the electric field penetrates into the superconductor, and leads to a nonlinear current-voltage characteristic.     Notes: We calculate the mobility of negative ions in superfluid 3He-B. We first derive the general formula for the mobility, and show that to a good approximation the scattering of quasiparticles from an ion may be treated as elastic, both in the superfluid for temperatures not too far below the transition temperature and also in the normal state. The scattering cross section in the superfluid is then calculated in terms of normal state properties; as we show, it is vital to include the effects of superfluid correlations on intermediate states in the scattering process. We find that for quasiparticles near the gap edge, the quasiparticle-ion scattering amplitude has a resonant behavior, and that as a result of interference among many partial waves, the differential scattering cross section is strongly peaked in the forward direction and reduced at larger angles, in much the same way as in diffraction. The transport cross section for such a quasiparticle is strongly reduced compared to that for a normal state quasiparticle, and the mobility is consequently strongly enhanced. Detailed calculations of the mobility which contain essentially no free parameters, agree well with the experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract Phonon dispersion in liquid He II at long wavelengths and low temperatures is calculated using a generalized polarization potential approach and shown to yield results in good agreement with both superthermal phonon propagation and neutron scattering experiments at pressures up to 24 bar. It is shown that the long-wavelength dispersion relation is of the form ω q =s 0 q(1+ω2 q 2+ω3 q 3+...) suggested by Feenberg and by Kemoklidze and Pitaevskii, but that the validity of such an expansion is restricted to wave vectorsq≲0.1Å −1. For larger values ofq, one can force a polynomial fit, containing only odd powers ofq, to the dispersion curve and other parameters of interest, but the number of terms which must be kept is so large as to render such an approach unwieldy.
