    Notes: Osteopetrosis is an autosomal recessive disease in several mammalian species. Osteopetrotic op/op rats sutler from complete failure of tooth eruption related to reduced bone resorption. In our earlier studies, op/op rats grafted with bone marrow cells 3 days after birth were cured of the disease and their molar eruption was restored. However, the incisors failed to erupt and their proliferating ends were distorted, forming odontomas. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the odontogenic tissues in the odontomas, using the correlated techniques of radiography and microradiography of undecalcified material, together with histology of decalcified material and scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence, location and histologic features of the different types of mineralization observed in the pulp of human primary molars. Microradiography and light microscopy of undemineralized material disclosed that 95% of primary molars contain pulp calcifications. Histologically, their structure may be classified into four different types: (1) pulp stones, (2) diffuse calcifications, (3) eburnoid tissue and (4) spherulitic calcifications.

    Notes: This study was undertaken to investigate the mineral phase of spherulitic calcifications discovered in the pulpous mesenchyme of human primary molars by microradiography. Analytical scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction disclosed that well-crystallized brushite is the major compound of the spherulites. The mechanism leading to the crystallization of brushite is far from well understood. Histologically, on decalcified sections, inflammatory cells and capillaries can be seen trapped in the spherulites. In the light of these findings, it could be suggested that metabolic conditions may promote the crystallization of brushite in the pulp of primary molars.

    Notes: The osteopetrotic op/op rats suffered from a complete failure of tooth eruption in association with a reduced bone resorption. An unresorbed occlusal bone overlaid the germs which remained embedded in bone. The process of prefunctional eruption in limited growing teeth depends on the resorption of the alveolar bone covering the germs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of hematopoietic grafts in newborn op/op rats on the process of prefunctional eruption. Fifteen op/op treated rats were used for radiographic, microradiographic and histologic examinations. After transfusion of bone marrow cells, we observed the restoration of bone resorption and a delayed eruption of the molars. The incisors never erupted. They developed odontome-like tumors near their apices. These results confirm the dependence of tooth eruption on bone resorption.

    Notes: Abstract The decrease of the intertidal seagrass Zostera noltii in the Dutch Wadden Sea may have been the result of enhanced periphyton load due to eutrophication. Decrease of this seagrass species coincided with an increase in the mudsnail Hydrobia ulvae. Feeding of this mudsnail on periphyton may have partly counteracted an increase of periphyton biomass. Exclosure experiments on seagrass stands in the Dutch Wadden Sea in 1987 showed that density of periphyton on leaves of Z. noltii decreased significantly with increasing density of grazers. An increased density of mudsnails significantly enhanced the density and biomass of seagrass, in particular of the below ground parts. Since this seagrass species survives winter in temperate climate zones mainly by means of rhizomes, grazing may also influence the seagrass dynamics in the long term. Results of the experiment were in agreement with field observations on coinciding low densities of mudsnails and high densities of fouling of seagrass stands on the tidal flats of western Wadden Sea in the late 1970s.

    Notes: Abstract The response of experimental ecosystem dynamics to varying nutrient loads was studied by analysing oxygen time-series. Time-series had been continuously recorded, and the data were analysed on a daily basis using a computer model which describes basic oxygen processes. The resulting sets of production and consumption parameters described the dynamic characteristics of each basin during the experimental period of 180 days. Dynamical analysis appeared to be possible; although the results did not indicate a clear relationship between oxygen dynamics and nutrient supply in these systems.

    Notes: Abstract  Borum and Sand-Jensen (1996) described empirical relationships between nitrogen (N) loadings from land and total (benthic + pelagic) primary production rates in shallow coastal marine waters. We applied these relationships to N loadings of the western Wadden Sea system, and compared the production estimates with actually observed primary production rates of autotrophic components (phytoplankton, microphytobenthos, macroalgae and seagrasses) for those years for which field data were available. During the 1980s and early 1990s, primary production values appear in good agreement with those derived from the empirical relationships. During the 1960s and early 1970s, however, these relationships substantially overestimated the total primary production in the western Wadden Sea. Based on ambient nutrient concentrations and the Redfield ratio, production in that period was considered not to be limited by N but by phosphorus (P) during most of the time. It is concluded that primary production is not invariably stimulated by N loading from land. If other factors (i.e. additional nutrient sources, N:P ratios, internal nutrient dynamics and co-limiting effects of nutrients and light) are not taken into account, management regulations that are targeted at diminishing the effects of eutrophication hold the risk of seriously under- or overestimating nutrient reductions that are thought necessary to achieve their goals.

    Notes: Abstract Leaf dynamics and standing stocks of intertidal seagrasses were studied in the Baie d'Aouatif (Parc National du Banc d'Arguin, Mauritania) in April and September 1988. Standing stocks of Zostera noltii Hornem. suggest a unimodal seasonal curve similar to what is found for populations at higher latitudes. Also, leaf growth rates (0.03 cm2 cm−2 day−1 on average) were similar to those found at higher latitudes in these months. Variation in leaf loss over tidal depth, time and different locations in the Baie d'Aouatif was larger and more often significant than variation in leaf growth. In general, Z. noltii beds in the Baie d'Aouatif had comparable leaf growth rates and standing stocks. In both months losses were almost always higher than or equal to growth. Variation in leaf loss over time was much higher in the plots that were situated high in the intertidal than in lower plots. This is explained by differences in susceptibility to sloughing, which is presumably higher in periods with low tide around noon for shallow depths. In an experiment using artificial shading nets, in situ leaf growth was affected negatively from 94% shading onwards. This shading was observed to reduce the light intensity reaching the seagrass bed to a level below the reported range of light compensation points for Z. noltii. Cymodocea nodosa (Ucria) Ascherson on average had higher leaf area and relative growth rates than Z. noltii and much lower loss rates, resulting in a positive net increase in September. Standing stocks were also higher than for Z. noltii. A mixed seagrass bed containing the above two species and Halodule wrightii Ascherson had the highest observed total biomass: 335 g m−2 ash-free dry weight.

    Notes: Abstract Arachidonic acid cyclooxygenase metabolites, thromboxane B2 (TXB2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 (6-keto-PGF1) were measured in horses where anaesthesia was maintained with halothane. Two horses suffering from postanaesthetic myositis were compared with four normal horses. TXB2 and PGE2 levels were higher in mixed venous blood drawn from the myopathic horses. An increase of TXB2 and PGE2 levels appeared when myopathic horses were rolled into dorsal recumbency after a prolonged period of lateral recumbency. One hour after the end of anaesthesia, TXB2 had continued to increase whereas PGE2 decreased. By measurements on blood samples drawn from the brachial vein, we have shown that the rising level of TXB2 in mixed venous blood is mainly due to the increase of TXB2 in blood draining the dependent leg. The origin of the rise in PGE2 is not demonstrated in this study. 6-keto-PGF1 did not change during anaesthesia. An explanation of this imbalance between TXB2 and 6-keto-PGF1 production is considered.

    Notes: A multitechnique approach has been used to characterize the surface of nonosseointegrated titanium implants and the surrounding biological tissues. Five pure titanium dental implants were used as reference, and 25 removed implants were studied. Surface and in-depth chemical compositions of the implants (from a total of 16 patients) were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Histological slides of the surrounding tissues were examined by light microscopy, XPS, and electron microprobe analysis. None of the failed implants presented the regular surface composition and depth profile of the TiO2 overlayer; foreign elements (Ca, Na, P, Si, Cl, Zn, Pb, and Al) were observed on some implants. Fibrosis, lymphocytic and plasmocytic infiltrates, and granulomatous lesions were detected in the surrounding tissues. XPS and electron microprobe analysis indicated the presence of Zn, Fe, Sn, and Ti in the tissues. As a possible scenario for implant failure, we propose and discuss a oxidoreduction mechanism, leading to a partial dissolution or the complete dissociation of the protective titanium dioxide overlayer and to ion diffusion through the surrounding tissues. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
