    Notes: There is strong epidemiological and biological evidence that the development of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix is a multistep process in which human papillomaviruses (HPVs) play a crucial but not total role and where the synergistic effect of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been suggested. The presence of HPV, HSV and HCMV deoxyribonucleic acids (DNAs) was assessed by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in cervical biopsies obtained from 41 women with cervical neoplasia (21 high-grade cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and 20 squamous cell cancers) and 33 controls. Human papillomavirus 16 DNA was significantly more common in high-grade CIN (57%) and cancer (50%) than in normal cervix (9%). Herpes simplex virus and HCMV DNAs were present in 12% and 21% of normal cervices, 19% and 24% of high-grade CIN, and 25% and 25% of cancers, respectively. After adjustment for patients’ age, coinfection associating high-risk HPVs (HPV 16 and/or HPV 18) and herpes viruses (HCMV and/or HSV) were observed in cervical neoplasia (odds ratio (OR) = 19.11; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.14–170.36). Conversely, the OR for infection by HPV 16 and/or HPV 18 alone did not reach statistical significance (OR = 7.22; 95% CI: 0.85–61.16). Moreover infection by HCMV and/or HSV alone (OR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.33–2.24) was not associated with cervical neoplasia. Our results support the role of HSV and HCMV as cofactors of HPV 16 and HPV 18 in cervical neoplasia.

    Notes: Summary The Edinger-Westphal nucleus of one day old chicks was stimulated in vivo. This nucleus projects via the oculomotor nerve to the ciliary ganglion. The stimulation produces morphological changes in the calyciform endings located in the ciliary ganglion. There is a significant reduction of the numerical density on area of the clear and the dense core vesicles. The numerical density of the coated vesicles is low compared to that of the clear vesicles. Their density is however almost doubled by the stimulation. The vesicles, the vacuoles and the plasma membrane were quantified using stereological procedures. A net loss of total membrane was found due to the loss of organelle membrane not compensated for by an equivalent increase of the plasma membrane. These observations are discussed in terms of the theory of vesicular membrane recycling as proposed by Heuser and Reese (1973).

    Notes: Abstract It has been shown that in the chick dorsal root ganglion (DRG) about 8% of neurons, belonging to both the A and B classes of sensory neurons exhibit a clear dopamine immunoreactivity. In the present study are reported the results of measurements, by mean of HPLC-electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED), of DA and of the DA metabolites dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) in the rat DRG and their central nerves. Very low levels of DA, about 10 folds lower than the levels found in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, were found in the DRG. However the levels of DOPAC and HVA were approximately equivalent to the levels found in the cord. The immunocytochemical study performed in parallel has shown that some dopaminergic-immunoreactive fibers in the DRG are located around the blood vessels. Few dopamine-immunoreactive sensory neurons were identified in the DRG and immunoreactive fibers, not linked to blood vessels, were identified in the dorsal root nerves. The present work indicates that there is a dopaminergic innervation of the blood vessels in the rat DRG but that dopamine may also be, as in the chick, a transmitter of primary afferent fibers.

    Notes: Abstract Conventional peripherally invasive mechanical circulatory assist methods such as intra-aortic balloon pumping are of only limited hemodynamic benefit in cases of severe left ventricular failure. This article deals with the analysis and testing of a new pumping concept (16), that is theoretically capable of providing adequate circulatory and respiratory assistance in cases of severe uni- or biventricular failure. This assist system combines an intra-aortic balloon pump (a series form of left ventricular assistance) and pulsatile venoarterial membrane oxygenator bypass (a parallel mode of assistance). The combined pulsatile assist system is controlled by a digital microprocessor which provides appropriate phasing relative to the R wave of the ECG. This support system requires only cannulation of femoral or other easily exposed vessels. Blood-gas exchange gas diffusion or massive pulmonary embolism or other perfusion defects. This concept has been tested in a series of experiments with canine models of ventricular failure. The results of this study indicate that (1) balloon pumping becomes much more effective when combined with pulsatile veno-arterial bypass in cases of severe ventricular failure with an attendant hypotensive circulatory state, and (2) the automatic control system is effective in optimizing the performance of the combined assist system.

    Notes: Abstract An automatic control scheme for the control of intra-aortic balloon pumping has been implemented on a Digital Equipment Corporation LSI-11 micro-processor system and tested in experiments conducted on a mock circulatory loop as well as in a series of acute animal experiments. The control algorithm employed by the digital controller (LSI-11) is identical in form to that employed by Clark et al. (3), and consists of [1] the beat-by-beat evaluation of a performance index that reflects the objectives of balloon pumping, and [2] the adjustment of balloon inflation and deflation times within the diastolic period so as to maximize this performance index according to a steepest ascent algorithm. In order to reduce convergence time and minimize disturbances around the optimum operating point, a scheme that reduces search step size as the search proceeds from initial values is also incorporated in the algorithm. Importantly, this system obeys a bedside measurement constraint in that it requires only readily available physiologic signals for its operation; the ECG for timing purposes, and the central aortic pressure for evaluation of the system performance index. A number of conventional safety features are also implemented in the controller to, for example, guard against untimely balloon inflation in the occurrence of aberrant heart beats. Finally, the ability of this digital controller to reach an optimum independent of the dynamics of the particular pneumatic pumping system utilized, coupled with the flexibility in design capability and relatively low cost of implementation via the microprocessor system, provide a significant advance in the area of the automatic control of intra-aortic balloon pumping.
