    Notes: The infrared absorption from intersubband transitions between the lowest two superlattice conduction minibands is investigated for n-type Ga1−xAlxSb/AlSb superlattices. In such an indirect semiconductor superlattice, intersubband transitions can be induced by normally incident light because of the effective-mass anisotropy and the tilted orientation of conduction-band valleys with respect to the growth direction. The absorption coefficients and peak transition wavelengths are calculated for superlattices grown in the [001], [110], and [111] directions for both normal and parallel incidence. In the [110] Ga1−xAlxSb/AlSb superlattice, peak absorption coefficients of 5000–7000 cm−1 are obtained for both normally and parallel incident radiation in the wavelength range of 8–14 μm with moderate sheet doping concentrations of 1012 cm−2. The ability to detect normally incident radiation and to achieve absorption comparable to that in the GaAs/Ga1−xAlxAs detectors makes the Ga1−xAlxSb/AlSb devices promising for future applications in long-wavelength infrared detection.

    Notes: We have made the first magnetotransport measurements of two-dimensional holes confined to GaSb in modulation-doped AlSb/GaSb heterostructures. The Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations in GaSb-AlSb heterostructures reflect the influence of strain as well as the symmetry of the confinement potential on the hole levels. We have also observed the quantized Hall effect in asymmetric single quantum wells.

    Notes: Summary We report multiple occurrences of various kinds of tumours that originate from hair follicles in a patient diagnosed with KID (keratitis, ichthyosis, deafness) syndrome. These tumours are diagnosed as: (i) trichilemmal cysts in early lesions; (ii) proliferating trichilemmal tumours in moderate duration lesions; and (iii) malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumours in advanced lesions that are thought to progress from benign trichilemmal lesions. This three-step process raises the hypothesis of a multihit model that could account for the frequent development of tumours in KID patients.

    Notes: The effect of interaction between carbon black and polymer on electrical behavior was studied using the ESR method. The polymer matrices used were HDPE, LDPE, and ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA). Two kinds of carbon blacks (CB), high structure CSF-III and low structure FEF, were used as a conductive filler. Compared to that of the HDPE/FEF compound, the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) intensity is lower and electrical reproducibility is worse for the HDPE/CSF-III compound; however, it can be improved significantly by radiation cross-linking. On the other hand, the cross-linking has no practical effect on the PTC intensity of the LDPE/CSF-III compound while it can be achieved by mixing the compound for a longer time. The great PTC intensity was obtained in the HDPE/EVA/CSF-III compound, and it is greater than that of HDPE/CSF-III or EVA/CSF-III. We explain these results using the concept of interaction between the filler and matrix. The absorption of the polymer on the carbon black surface may be physical or chemical; the latter is caused by the free-radical reaction between the polymer and carbon black, and it can occur during the radiation or preparation process of the compound. These “bound polymers” are essentially important for materials to have a great PTC intensity and good reproducibility. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
