    Notes: The mucus of the trout and char was found to contain only one sialic acid, n-acetyl neuraminic acid (NANA). The concentration of NANA in the epidermis is directly proportional to the mucous cell concentration. In both species the highest concentration of mucous cells occurs on the anterior regions of the body and there are significantly fewer cells on the fins. These findings are discussed in the light of our knowledge of the functions of fish mucus.

    Notes: The structure and histochemical characteristics of the epidermis of the char Salvelinus alpinus (L.) were studied at the light microscope level. Sialic acid-containing glycoproteins appear to form the main components of the mucous or goblet cells. A single incidence of handling can significantly increase the concentration of superficial goblet cells in the epidermis. Repeated handling results in a maximal response after 1 week but this is reduced to control levels after 1 month. These results are interpreted in terms of the structure of the char epidermis.

    Notes: Three groups of hatchery–reared brown trout were fed for 32 weeks with synthetic diets containing 0, 18 and 100 i.u. vitamin A palmitate g−1. Vitamin A levels in the liver of the fish at the end of the experiment were 3,50 and 300 i.u. g−1 respectively. The growth rate was not significantly different between any of the three groups of fish. At all times during the investigation epidermal thickness andgoblet cell concentration were similar in the three groups but there were significant changes in goblet cell concentration within each group during the experimental period. Sexually mature males in all three groups offish contained significantly fewer epidermal goblet cells than immature fish of either sex.

    Notes: A sexual dimorphism was found in the epidermis of hatchery-reared brown trout. The epidermis of both male and female fish undergoes rhythmical changes in thickness during successive spawning cycles. For most of the year the male has a significantly thicker epidermis than the female. During the spawning period (December and January) there is a highly significant drop in the concentration of mucous cells in the epidermis of the male brown trout. These findings are discussed in the light of our knowledge of the skin structure in other salmonid fish and in relation to possible hormonal factors influencing the epidermis of teleosts.

    Notes: An account is given of the histological changes associated with epidermal lesions on the Windermere perch, Perca fluviatilis L., between the months of January and March, 1976. During the later stages of the development of the lesions an apparent succession of fungal colonization was observed. A total of five genera of fungi were identified with Leptomitus lacteus appearing early in the infection and Achlya tending to dominate the more advanced lesions. The initial cause of the lesions has not been identified but the possibility of Argulus damage is discussed.

    Notes: Background: Recent research suggests that a proportion of women may develop posttraumatic stress disorder after birth. Research has not yet addressed the possibility that postpartum symptoms could be a continuation of the disorder in pregnancy. This study aimed to test the idea that some women develop posttraumatic stress disorder as a result of childbirth, and to provide an estimate of the incidence using a prospective design, which controls for the disorder in pregnancy. Method: This prospective study assessed 289 women at three time points: 36 weeks gestation and 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. The prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder was assessed by questionnaire at each time point, and the incidence was examined after removing women who had severe symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder or clinical depression in pregnancy. Results: After removing women at the first time point, 2.8 percent of women fulfilled criteria for the disorder at 6 weeks postpartum and this decreased to 1.5 percent at 6 months postpartum. Conclusions: The results suggest that at least 1.5 percent of women may develop chronic posttraumatic stress disorder as a result of childbirth. It is important to increase awareness about the disorder and to give health professionals access to simple screening tools. Intervention is possible at several levels, but further research is needed to guide this intervention.

    Notes: Summary Mitochondria-rich cells were located in the interplatelet area of gill filaments from ammocoete Lampetra fluviatilis and L. planeri. The ultrastructure of this cell type differs from typical teleost ‘chloride cells’ by the absence of a tubular, smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). This difference is discussed in relation to the presumed functions of the cell and to the evolutionary histories of lampreys and teleosts. It is concluded that the mitochondria-rich cell is responsible for the active uptake of ions by the ammocoete gill.

    Notes: Summary The interplatelet epithelium of the gills of freshwater and seawater adapted macrophthalmia stages of the river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis, was studied by electron microscopy. Three main cell types: basal, ion-excretory and superficial cells were identified and described. Ion-excretory cells were exposed to the environment in sea water but covered by a layer of superficial cells in fresh water. Electron-dense secretory granules in the apex of the cell were more abundant in fresh water. In fresh water, a few of the superficial cells contained numerous mitochondria and were identified as ion-uptake cells. In view of the scarcity of ion-uptake cells, the possibility that the ion-excretory cells are also responsible for ion-uptake in fresh water is discussed. Phagocytic removal of degenerating ion-excretory cells may be an important mechanism for the conservation of materials in a starving animal.

    Notes: Summary Two types of mitochondria-rich cells were found in the interplatelet areas of the gills of the migrating river lamprey. Both cell types are thought to be responsible for ion-transport across the gills. In the fresh-run migrant the gills are dominated by large, flask-shaped cells which show some ultra-structural similarities with the teleost chloride cell and have been tentatively referred to as ion-excretory cells. During the spawning migration the ion-excretory cells are replaced by smaller, mitochondria-rich cells which are similar in structure to the presumed ion-transporting cells in the ammocoete gill. They lack the tubular, smooth-membraned endoplasmic reticulum so characteristic of the lamprey ion-excretory cell and the teleost chloride cell and have been referred to as ion-uptake cells. The ion-uptake cells are found during the stenohaline, freshwater phases of the lamprey's life history. Ion-excretory cells are present during the periods of the life cycle when the animal is euryhaline. The possibility that the ion-excretory cells are also responsible for ion-uptake in fresh water is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Two types of mitochondria-rich cells were found in the interplatelet areas of the gills of sexually mature, male river lampreys. Type 1 cells (previously referred to as “male glandular cells”) showed some ultrastructural characteristics in common with ion-transporting cells but were readily distinguished by large lipid structures with electron-lucent centres. Type 2 cells were found to be identical to the presumed ion-uptake cells found during other stenohaline freshwater phases of the animal's life history. In the sexually mature female, only Type 2 cells were positively identified. This sexual dimorphism in gill structure is discussed in relation to the possible functions of the lamprey gill, with particular reference to ionic regulation.
