Notes: Isoprene basal emission (the emission of isoprene from leaves exposed to a light intensity of 1000 µmol m−2 s−1 and maintained at a temperature of 30 °C) was measured in Phragmites australis plants growing under elevated CO2 in the Bossoleto CO2 spring at Rapolano Terme, Italy, and under ambient CO2 at a nearby control site. Gas exchange and biochemical measurements were concurrently taken. Isoprene emission was lower in the plants growing at elevated CO2 than in those growing at ambient CO2. Isoprene emission and isoprene synthase activity (IsoS) were very low in plants growing at the bottom of the spring under very rich CO2 and increased at increasing distance from the spring (and decreasing CO2 concentration). Distance from the spring did not significantly affect photosynthesis making it therefore unlikely that there is carbon limitation to isoprene formation. The isoprene emission rate was very quickly reduced after rapid switches from elevated to ambient CO2 in the gas-exchange cuvette, whereas it increased when switching from ambient to elevated CO2. The rapidity of the response may be consistent with post-translational modifications of enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway of isoprene formation. Reduction of IsoS activity is interpreted as a long-term response. Basal emission of isoprene was not constant over the day but showed a diurnal course opposite to photosynthesis, with a peak during the hottest hours of the day, independent of stomatal conductance and probably dependent on external air temperature or temporary reduction of CO2 concentration. The present experiments show that basal emission rate of isoprene is likely to be reduced under future elevated CO2 levels and allow improvement in the modelling of future isoprene emission rates.

Notes: Abstract Administration of large doses of cimetidine for 45 days to rats decreases the weight of the prostate and seminal vesicles without affecting the testicles. The decrease in weight is due to a marked regression in the prostate of both epithelial and stromal tissue. Treatment with cimetidine also causes an increase in the plasma testosterone level without modifying the plasma values of LH and prolactin. The mechanism of action of cimetidine is discussed. In presence of high levels of testosterone, cimetidine depresses structures such as the prostate and seminal vesicles, which are sensitive to androgens, but does not depress the weight or change the histology profile of the testicles, which are also rich in androgen receptors. Perhaps cimetidine binds to androgen receptors differently in the prostate and in the testicles because of differences in receptor structure or more probably, cimetidine interacts with zinc metal ion essential to prostate growth and androgen action by lowering zinc prostatic levels and consequently depresses the prostatic weight.

Notes: Summary Intrathecal IgG synthesis has been investigated by determining the IgG index and by isoelectric focusing in 30 cases of definite multiple sclerosis, in 15 cases of probable multiple sclerosis and in 128 patients affected by other neurological diseases. The blood-brain barrier function was evaluated at the same time by serum albumin/CSF albumin quotient and isoelectric focusing. The IgG index was found elevated in 73.3% of definite multiple sclerosis patients, while oligoclonal IgG bands occurred in 90%. In the other neurological diseases the IgG index was abnormally increased in 35.1% but IgG bands were present only in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 1.5% and both in the CSF and serum in 7% of patients. The high capacity of isoelectric focusing to detect IgG oligoclonal bands in the CSF is pointed out as an extremely useful diagnostic tool in multiple sclerosis.

Notes: Summary In a long-standing case of myxoedema with ataxia and dysarthria, neurophysiological investigations were carried out to assess how much of the ataxic dysbasic syndrome depended on the slowness of mechanical contraction and how much resulted from primary cerebellar involvement. It was observed that the Achilles reflexogram showed a marked prolongation of contraction and relaxation time and that in both quadriceps and triceps surae mechanical percussion induced a marked myxoedema and prolonged relaxation time. The EMG of these muscles during voluntary contraction and stopping reaction detected an excessive recruitment of the antagonistic muscles, starting without any abnormal delay, a finding at variance with a typical cerebellar pattern. Posturographic analysis gave a pattern of oscillations still within the normal range. These findings suggest that the gait alterations of our patient depended on the increase in muscle contraction time and the consequent excessive recruitment of the antagonists.

Notes: Abstract We define the concept of muscle tone and describe the signs and symptoms of its alteration in spasticity. In assessing muscle tone it is important to consider all the inputs and outputs affecting it, using biomechanical-EMG techniques for measuring active tone. We list the various features of the myotatic and defence reflexes that are altered in spastics and analyze the altered parameters in relation to the tonic reflexes. The degree of displacement, the position from which it is initiated and the velocity of displacement constitute a specific, sensitive and reliable criterion. We report the results of a personal study of these reflexes and of the shortening reflexes.
