Notes: . We observed different low salinity tolerances between two groups of populations of Euplotes crassus. After mating analysis, the less tolerant populations could be assigned to three mating groups. Two of them were separated by preconjugative barriers but both conjugated with a third one. A breeding test showed evidence of (potential) introgression mediated by this “bridging” group. On the other hand, the more tolerant populations formed a fourth mating group unable to conjugate with the others and characterized by distinct zymogram patterns. We conclude that natural introgression among the studied populations is not complete and that the species structure of E. crassus comprises intrafertile sets of populations among which gene flow may be difficult or virtually absent.

Notes: Abstract The macronuclear chromatin of the ciliate Blepharisma japonicum was studied by electrophoretic and immunological techniques as well as by micrococcal nuclease digestion and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Under these experimental conditions the macronuclear chromatin of B. japonicum was compared to that of Tetrahymena pyriformis. Data obtained through this analysis showed that the macronuclear chromatin of B. japonicum is structurally more relaxed than that of T. pyriformis. A perchloric acid soluble polypeptide, referred to as P3, is the only polypeptide of B. japonicum chromatin to appear immunologically related to the H1 histone of T. pyriformis. It is suggested that this P3 polypeptide in B. japonicum should be considered functionally equivalent to the T. pyriformis H1 histone, even though it differed from it both in terms of molecular mass and relative concentration.

Notes: Abstract We used probes from the juxtacentromeric region of the chromosome 17 short arm to map three microdeletions in patients with Smith-Magenis syndrome. The commonclinical findings were: speech delay with behavioural problems associated with broad flat midface, brachycephaly, broad nasal bridge and brachydactyly. We demonstrated, using Southern blot analysis (loss of heterozygosity and gene dosage), that all patients were deleted for two p11.2 markers: pYNM 67-R5 (D17S29) and pA10-41 (D17S71). We determined that one breakpoint was located between D17S58 and D17S29 and the other breakpoint distal to D17S71. The possibility that an unstable region, located between the Smith-Magenis syndrome locus and CMT1A a closely located locus, could be involved in the rearrangements associated with these two inherited diseases is discussed.
