Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
In a study of the cationic and ZIEGLER-NATTA polymerisations of bicyclo[n.1.0]alkanes (n = 0, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10) the following monomers were polymerised: cyclopropane, bicyclo-[3.1.0]hexane, bicyclo[4.1.0]heptane, bicyclo[5.1.0]octane, bicyclo[6.1.0]nonane and bicyclo[10.1.0]tridecane.The polymers obtained by cationic polymerisation are poly(methylcycloalkanes). In the polymers obtained by heterogeneous ZIEGLER-NATTA polymerisation, the rings are separated by a methylene group coming from cyclopropane, the opening of which occurs without further rearrangement. The size of the rings affects the degree of polymerisation, but in general the molecular weights are relatively low, and oligomers are the predominant products.
