Notes: [Auszug] A female fly (head fixed to the thorax) was attached to a fast torque meter, in the centre of a cylindrical panorama, as described before1. The torque signal is transduced into angular displacement of the 'panorama' through an analog simulation of the flight dynamics. In this way it is possible to ...

Notes: [Auszug] Is the need for 3-D range-based or manually specified models real? Structure from motion theorems10'11, pioneered by Ull-man12, indicate that full information about the 3-D structure of an object represented as a set of feature points (at least five to eight) is present in just two of their ...

Notes: [Auszug] Julesz and Spivack's10 claim that stereo fusion of their random-line stereograms is based on vernier cues alone is apparently the best evidence for the interpolation process being parallel; Fig. la shows an example of their random-line stereograms. Figure 2 illustrates by a small 4x5 array of ...

Notes: [Auszug] If an observer moves in a three-dimensional world, a flow of apparent motion (optical flow) occurs on his retina which is useful for performing several different tasks such as image segmentation, determination of structure from motion, and navigation. We have developed a new parallel algorithm to ...

Notes: Abstract A mathematical analogy between the holographic models of temporal memory and Reichardt's optomotor theory is stressed. It is pointed out that the sequence of operations which is essential to any holographic model of brain functioning is actually carried out by a nervous structure in the optomotor behaviour. Some implications in both the optomotor theory and the hypothesis of neural holographic processes are further suggested.

Notes: Abstract An algebraic characterization of convolution and correlation is outlined. The basic algebraic structures generated on a suitable vector space by the two operations are described. The convolution induces an associative Abelian algebra over the real field; the correlation induces a not-associative, not-commutative — but Lieadmissible algebra — with a left unity. The algebraic connection between the two algebras is found to coincide with the relation of isotopy, an extension of the concept of equivalence. The interest of these algebraic structures with respect to information processing is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Head and body movements of flies (Musca domestica and Calliphora erythrocephala) have been studied during sustained flight. Two main points emerge from the analysis: a) Changes in body direction and head direction occur simultaneously in almost all cases. b) During visually guided flight active neck movements are initiated together and in the same direction of body movements. This does not hold in absence of a visual pattern (“search”). Implications of these findings with respect to the organization of the control system underlying head-body coordination in flies are briefly discussed.
