Notes: 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of Tm2Fe14B, measured above and below the spin reorientation temperature (∼310 K), have been analyzed and are entirely consistent with a rotation of the magnetization from the basal plane to the c axis as the temperature is increased.

Notes: Hydrophones to be used in the characterization of medical ultrasonic transducers have been fabricated using a new polyvinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene (VF2/VF3) copolymer. The copolymer has an advantage over VF2 in that it does not require prestretching before poling. Thin copolymer films can be cast from solution and then poled using the corona discharge method. As there is a need for small-diameter hydrophones to provide good spatial resolution in measuring highly focused ultrasonic beams, hydrophones with diameter as small as 0.1 mm have been made. Both needle-type and line hydrophones have been tested and their performance reported. In the case of line hydrophones, the output signal is proportional to the line integral of the acoustic pressure and a computer tomographic technique has been used to reconstruct the beam profiles.

Notes: A polarimetric ultrasonic sensor consisting of a polarization-maintaining fiber carrying light from a laser is described, and its application to the characterization of high-frequency (1–10 MHz) ultrasonic fields is demonstrated. The principle of the sensor is based on the detection of ultrasonically induced birefringence in the fiber. The advantage of using a polarization-maintaining fiber instead of a single-mode fiber is discussed. The response of the sensor to both continuous and pulsed ultrasound at frequencies ranging from 1 to 10 MHz and at different power levels has been investigated, and a tomographic technique was used to compute transducer beam profiles with high spatial resolution (∼0.1 mm). Profiles measured in this way are compared with those measured using a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hydrophone, and are shown to have superior spatial resolution. The sensor output is observed to be a linear function of the square root of the total acoustic power, which is measured with a radiation force balance. The advantages of this sensor over available PVDF hydrophones are its ability to withstand very high ultrasonic power, and its excellent spatial resolution for beam profile measurements. It is most accurately employed in situations where the acoustic beam is both narrow and plane wave like as is the case in transducer focal regions. This is just the situation in which conventional "point'' hydrophones, with their limited spatial resolution, are least accurate. This sensor should therefore find applications in the characterization of medical ultrasonic transducers.

Notes: Abstract The anodic reactions of Ni3S2,β-NiS and a commercial nickel matte have been investigated galvanostatically. It is shown that the matte as well as both compounds decompose with loss of nickel ions through the series of phases: Ni1.5S2 → Ni1.2S2 → NiS2 → Ni2+ + 2S0

Notes: Abstract Optical spectroscopy indicated that the partial oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ on heating natural cordierites above ∼500° C was not sensitive to oxygen partial pressure. This result suggested that the partial oxidation takes place by loss of mobile charge compensators such as protons. Ionizing radiation also produced partial oxidation of the minor-site Fe2+ to Fe3+, but this effect could be reversed by annealing at ∼300° C and so was due only to an electronic redistribution. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed these results, although there were complications due to apparent thermal decomposition in localized regions of the cordierites on heating in air. Ionizing radiation also produced strong absorption in the near-ultraviolet and blue regions of the optical spectrum. This absorption, which was strongest in the α polarization, had different annealing characteristics to those of the crystal-field absorption bands near 10,000 cm−1. Dehydration by heating above ∼900° C severely reduced the subsequent effect of ionizing radiation on the optical spectra. On heating over a temperature range spanning the dehydration temperature, the lack of any changes in the absorption energies of the β- and γ-polarized crystal field bands near 10,000 cm−1, of any changes in the ratio of the intensities of these β- and γ-polarized crystal field bands, and of any singularity in the intensity variations of the bands with heating temperature, all suggest that these bands originate from substitutional Fe2+ rather than Fe2+ in channel sites. Mössbauer evidence also supports this. The formation of pleochroic haloes in cordierite is discussed briefly. No evidence of CO - 3 centres in the irradiated samples was found.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer spectra of five samples of Fe x O with compositions in the range 1.00〉x〉0.95 have been recorded at 298 K and 4.2 K. The spectrum of Fe x O at 298 K consists of an asymmetric doublet which was fitted to one Fe2+ singlet, two Fe2+ doublets and 1 Fe3+ singlet. The Mössbauer parameters vary consistently with the increasing density of defects as x decreases. The Mössbauer spectrum of Fe x O at 4.2 K consists of a large number of unresolved lines. The data were fitted to a series of singlets to enable the rough calculation of quantities relating to the mean Fe2+ and Fe3+ environments. The results of the fits to the 298 K spectra are briefly discussed in terms of a physical model for the defect structure of Fe x O.

Notes: Abstract 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of Fe2+ ions in ferrous fluosilicate, including effects of relaxation, have been calculated using a stochastic model that takes account of coupling between electronic states by the magnetic hyperfine interaction. The model is valid only at high temperatures, and it provides a consistent explanation of the changes in line broadening that occur at the 240 K phase transition.

Notes: Abstract The appearance in Mössbauer relaxation spectra of ‘ghost’ lines, which are narrow lines that do not correspond to transitions between real hyperfine energy levels of the resonant system, is examined. It is shown that in many cases of interest, the appearance of these ‘ghost’ lines can be interpreted in terms of the relaxational averaging of one or more of the static interactions of the ion.
