Notes: Objective To derive clinical standards for singleton birthweight in a population based on area of residence.Design Analysis of variables recorded in Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank, calculating for each birth a standardised birthweight score, taking account of determining factors.Subjects All singleton live births of 32 to 42 weeks gestation to Aberdeen City District residents from 1979 to 1983.Results Basic standards of birthweight are presented correcting for gestational age, sex of the baby and parity of the mother. Birthweight is not normally distributed and empirical data are presented rather than smoothed curves. Adjustment for maternal height is straightforward but adjustment for maternal weight must take account of the gestation at which the woman was weighed. A method of calculating the appropriate correction for height and weight is described in detail. Conclusion Birthweight is not normally distributed at each week of gestation. Standardisation for parity, gestation and sex of the baby is essential, but adjustment for maternal size is complex.

Notes: Summary. The standardization of birthweight for gestational age, taking into accounhd sex of infant and maternal height and weight, is clinically useful and essential for some research purposes. In Britain, the most commonly used standards for singletons are those derived from Thomson et al. (1968) from a series of births to women in Aberdeen between 1948 and 1964. The present study starts with the observation that the present population of births in Aberdeen is different. This prompted work to ‘update’ the standards at least for research purposes, and in so doing a number of problems have been encountered which complicate the task of developing universally applicable standards.

Notes: Summary. The distributions of standardized birthweights of babies born to women of given heights married to short and tall husbands were compared. The standardized birthweights were consistently greater for babies born to women with tall husbands. It is concluded that tall parental stature relates to favourable environmental and genetic components among those influencing birthweight.

Notes: The annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is here used as a standard measure against which to compare expenditure on Health & Welfare and Defence budgets, between Conservative and Labour governments and the four largest EC countries 1973/4-1993/4.An analysis of Mrs Thatcher's governments’ expenditure shows that proportionately less GDP went to General Government Expenditure (GGE) than all the other European Community countries. Mrs Thatcher's first government maintained the unprecedented level of GDP devoted to Health reached in 1978/79, but successive administrations began to reduce, and, plan further reductions of GDP for the NHS. Relative decreases of GDP were also found in relation to expenditure on Social Security, Housing, and Personal Social Services and Defence. The governments of France, Germany and Italy provided more of their GDP to health than Britain, whilst at the same time we spent more on Defence and Law & Order & Public Safety. This raises the question: what can we afford for the NHS?A review of demographic changes shows that the British infant and elderly population, who are associated with demands for health, were proportionately more numerous than in France, Germany and Italy. This suggests the need for more UK health expenditure if Britain is to meet current and future needs.

Notes: SUMMARY There has been a long-standing interest in attempting to link home and school (Central Advisory Council 1967) and the recognition of the importance of the child's home background upon his educational achievement has grown (Douglas et al. 1972, Wedge & Prosser 1973). It would seem that in practice however, the main school-home contact has been the Education Welfare Officer (Pritchard 1973). While Plowden stressed the potential of the Education Welfare Officer it is known that there are difficulties in realizing this because of shortcomings in the Education Welfare Officer's training and status (Pritchard 1974, Local Government Training Board 1974).In the United States home and school have been brought together by the long-established School Cotmsellor or School Social Worker (Clegg & Megson 1970). It has been found however, that even in the United States their role has been diffuse, depending upon variations in local policy and there has been little examination of their work (Know et al. 1974). IN the United Kingdom social work has grown (Lyons 1973) as local education authorities have made various efforts to orientate schools towards the community; one such method was the Central Lancashire Family and Community Project (Marshall & Rose 1975). The project centred upon the work of School Social Workers, and their work in reducing maladaptive behaviour was encouraging. Another such scheme was introduced by the West Riding County Council who appointed Youth Tutors to some of their secondary schools. The Youth Tutors' work varied greatly as different emphasis was placed upon their work, though they generally acted in a counselling role and sought to involve the home and commvmity with the school and also attempted t o establish more extracurricular activities (Sedgwick 1975). It is with this development that the present study is concerned. We attempted to discover something of the Youth Tutors' influence, if any, upon the teachers' perception of children's behaviour in school. We wished to determine whether there would be any variation in the perception of teachers who came from schools which had a Youth Tutor and those which had not. We focused upon teachers' views of the origin of the behaviour and what action they might take in response to such children.
