Notes: Abstract. We present a construction which gives deterministic upper bounds for stochastic programs in which the randomness appears on the right–hand–side and has a multivariate Gaussian distribution. Computation of these bounds requires the solution of only as many linear programs as the problem has variables.

Notes: Abstract The scaled-sample property ({X j /γ n } j=1 n →K a.s. asn→∞, whereγ n 〈0 andX( j ) are i.i.d. with law μ) is investigated for distributions μ which are the laws of random series of form ∑ i=1 ∞ X i v i . Herev i are fixed vectors in a Banach space, andX i are i.i.d. real-valued with common lawμ 1. The main result presented here establishes this convergence for a large collection of possible distributionsμ 1, including some discrete examples. The main tools used are probability inequalities on the tails of the series, and concentration of measure arguments.

Notes: Abstract. A primeness criterion due to Bell is shown to apply to the universal enveloping algebra of the Cartan type Lie superalgebras S (V ) and $ \widetilde {S}(V;t) $ when dim V is even. This together with other recent papers yields¶¶Theorem. Let L be a finite-dimensional simple Lie superalgebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Then L satisfies Bell's criterion (so that U ( L) is prime and hence semiprimitive), unless L is of one of the types: b (n) for n≥ 3; W (n) for odd n≥ 5; S (n) for odd n≥ 3.¶¶ On the other hand, if dim V is odd then U (S(V )) is never semiprime.

Notes: The properties of crosslinked thermosetting resins depend markedly on the completeness of the crosslinking process. Determination of the degree of cure of an unsaturated polyester resin has been studied previously by mechanical, spectroscopic and volume resistivity methods. In this respect the effect of cure time and temperature on the ac dielectric constant and dissipation factor at 1 kc/s and 10 kc/s is considered. The dissipation factor appears to be a most useful parameter for detecting changes in the degree of cure in the later stages of reaction. The electrical properties of the cured resin are discussed, and values for the energy of activation for electrical conduction are compared with literature reports on similar materials.

Notes: Abstract The effect of water on the critical stress intensity factor,K IC, of a highly unsaturated isophthalic polyester resin has been measured for periods of immersion of up to 2200 h in water at temperatures of 35, 70 and 80° C.K IC decreased from 0.84±0.1 MN m−3/2 to 0.24±0.03 MN m−3/2 after immersion for 2200 h in water at 80° C. The observed changes in the critical stress intensity factor indicate that a constant value is eventually reached. This is consistent with the decline being attributable to the leaching of extractable matter from the polyester resin.

Notes: There appear to be very few literature estimates of the size or the shape of the plastic zone in polybismaleimides, whether calculated or observed experimentally. Bismaleimides are characteristically much more brittle on a macroscopic scale than other thermosetting resins and might be expected to have exceptionally small plastic zone radii. In this paper, experimental investigations are described, which conclude that the plastic zone must be much smaller in bismaleimides than in epoxies, even after rubber toughening, and before the network is fully developed by postcure. No direct observation of the zone radius could be made, but model calculations were carried out using Irwin, Dugdale, Tresca and von Mises expressions. The estimated zone radii declined with cure time, and became more or less negligible for all except the highest rubber concentrations after postcure. Plane stress models gave higher radii than plane strain ones. The very small calculated plastic zones of bismaleimides were consistent with the low observed ratio of tensile to compressive strength. This ratio implies marked resistance to yielding compared with that to crack propagation, and suggests a morphology consisting of exxtensive regions of continuous, rigid crosslinked structures, with minimum scope for shear.

Notes: Processable and practically useful thermosetting resins are almost invariably highly polar. For this and other reasons they can absorb considerable moisture, which affects their physical, electrical and mechanical properties. Crosslinked vinyl terminated oligomeric polyethers (VTPs) of very low polarity are described and their moisture absorption characteristics are compared with those of a standard amine cured Epikote 828® epoxy resin cured with metaphenylene diamine (MPD). The equilibrium moisture absorption of the vinyl terminated polymers is about one-tenth of that of the epoxy system, but their diffusivity is higher. The dependence of the equilibrium uptake on temperature, relative humidity, specimen thickness and oligomer proportions is discussed. The effect of moisture saturation on the d.c. volume resistivity is considered. Moisture prevents the resin from obeying Ohm's law.
