A high-performance data system has been designed using a Motorola 68000-based microcomputer running under a multitasking, real-time operating system. Data acquisition can be performed in the accumulation mode, thus increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. Operation with resolution 5000, over a large mass range [4000 atom mass units (amu)] can be achieved. The mass spectrometer must be calibrated before assigning one mass to each peak. The calibration is performed using data obtained with a known compound, with an interactive utility, so that the operator may control the search of reference peaks. The only requirement for a mass spectrometer to be used with this system is that it be equipped with a reproducible magnet, allowing for several consecutive spectra to be added without reducing the resolution.
