Abstract The cement-forming characteristics of selected chain, sheet and framework silicates when mixed with aqueous solutions of acrylic acid polymers have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and the measurement of physical properties. The initial stages of the cement-forming reaction were investigated by measuring the release of elements from minerals into acid solution and estimating the extent of mineral decomposition. The degree of neutralization and the structure of the polysalt matrix were determined by infrared spectroscopy.
