Abstract 315 strains ofD. pneumoniae were isolated in the Cologne area during the period from October, 1970, to January, 1972. Of these, 274 strains were recovered from cases with respiratory tract infections, and 41 from other pathological material. Predominant serological types were: 19F, 3, 23F, 11A, 8, 9N, 4, 31, 10A and 15F. 55 types were found in the investigated material out of 82 recognized. Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed high susceptibility to penicillins, cephaloridine, vancomycin, erythromycin and nitrofurans. Single strains resistant to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, lincomycin and novobiocin, were found. There was no relation between antibiotic resistance and serological type. Prevalence of serological types ofD. pneumoniae strains isolated in USA, Denmark, Poland and Germany, was compared.
