Notes: Abstract The mean activity coefficients of NaCl in the system NaCl+Na2SO4+H2O at various compositions were determined in the temperature range 5–45°C from the emf of potentiometric cells. By processing the results using Pitzer's equations the mixing parameters describing the non-ideal behavior of electrolytes were calculated. The temperature coefficients of the mixing parameters were determined and found not to be significant. The mixing parameters and temperature coefficients calculated for the binary mixture can be used to describe the behavior of multicomponent systems containing NaCl and Na2SO4, and eventually sea water.

Notes: Abstract Dissolution of membraneous composite ions of copper sulfide precipitate-based ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) has been measured in various ligand solutions by ICP atomic emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry from the solution side and by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry on the electrode surface. Asymmetric dissolution, amount of copper dissolved is higher than that of sulfur, was generally observed. The copper dissolution is correlated with the potential response as well as conditional stability constants. The results are discussed in terms of the charge separation caused by the asymmetric dissolution and electrostatic interaction of charged ligands with the space charge on the electrode surface in view of microscopic characterization of ISEs in metal buffer solutions in general. The results were also used to clarify the reason for some discrepancies of complex stability constants obtained by precipitate-based ISEs and other methods.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Atomarabsorptions-Spektrophotometrie eignet sich zur relativ raschen Bestimmung geringer Metallkonzentrationen in hochgereinigtem Kupfer.
Notes: Summary AAS is a relatively rapid and convenient method for determining metal components in low concentration in a copper matrix. The accuracy of the method is satisfactory. Separation of the matrix element is necessary in the case of cobalt and iron only if their concentrations are below 0.1%, and in the case of gallium, germanium and tin if they are below 1%.

Notes: Abstract Based on structure-selectivity studies on bis-benzo-crown ether derivatives, 2,2′-bis[3,4-(15-crown-5)-2-nitrophenylcarbamoxymethyl]tetradecane (BME-44) was designed and synthesized. The performance characteristics of this new, highly lipophilic ionophore of the group of bis-nitrobenzo-15-crown-5 derivatives with urethane linkage when used in liquid membrane electrodes are evaluated with special regard to the requirements of biological and clinical applications. Potentiometric steady-state and flow-through dynamic data are presented to prove the sensor capabilities for clinical and physiological potassium determinations.

Notes: Abstract Calcium and salicylate sensitive electrode membranes based on plasticized PVC were used for selective amperometric detection in a flow injection system. The peak current was found to depend linearly on concentration and the working range extended well below the potentiometric detection limit.

Notes: By comparing calculated and experimental data, the accuracy of the assumed equivalent circuit of the oscillometric microcell was proved. The cell parameters were defined and can be used to characterize the cell and to establish the range of its applicability. The correlation between the output voltage of the oscillator and the sample concentration was studied in the case of the measuring principle applied (measurement of quality factor Q). A relationship was derived for describing the dependence of the analytical signal on the concentration, which enabled the factors influencing the sensitivity to be determined. All these studies served to optimize the cell geometry and oscillator circuit.

Notes: A flow-through measuring cell developed for flow injection analysis (FIA) measurements is described. The cell works detecting amperometrically the hydrogen peroxide formed in an enzyme-catalyzed oxidation reaction of different substrates. The electrode consists of a thin, hollow dialysis fiber introduced into the flow analysis channel, an enzyme solution film pumped inside the fiber, and a cellulose acetate protective layer-coated thin platinum wire-base sensor housed inside the hollow fiber. The measuring cell for two different model compounds, glucose and ethanol, was well applicable for the concentration determinations in small volume solution aliquots. Important advantages of the cell are its versatility and its easy activation for measurements.

Notes: Based on complex chemical considerations, lipophilic diamide derivatives have been designed and synthesized as ionophores for liquid membrane electrodes. The structure-selectivity studies revealed that the majority of the ligands exhibit calcium ion selectivity, except the compound bis-N,N-dicyclohexyl-malonamide. The latter has an almost equal selectivity for Ca2+ and Mg2+ and sufficiently rejects sodium ions, thus it lends itself to water hardness measurements.
