Abstract On August 2, 1869, Gustav Simon performed in Heidelberg the first successful intentional nephrectomy on a woman patient. That date marks the beginning of renal surgery that has scored great advance over the past century. The author cites highlights of Simon's biography and describes the first kidney excision. There are also data on first nephrectomies carried out in Russia, Germany, France, Hungary and other countries. The major trends and advances of renal surgery are shown. There has been observed a gradual decrease in mortality after nephrectomy in various diseases, as well as a decrease, in the last few years, in the proportion of nephrectomies owing to an increase in the proportion of organ-saving operations on the kidneys. Accomplishments of the most prominent surgeons and urologists in the field are listed.
